Mold Attacks!
    #10249505 - 04/28/09 01:34 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

So it's been raining a fair amount lately and I noticed this morning:

While the cactus was forming the callous, my brother for some reason decided to mess with it and somehow broke the callous, so it had to re-heal, and resulted in some flaps of skin and stuff as you can see. I'm pretty sure this is why mold is getting into the cactus.

So should I be worried? It's getting sunny out, and hopefully it'll dry out soon. Will the mold die off once it's dry?

Also on a side note...it's finally pupping. :awesome:

Oh crap, that looks gross and cannot be good. I once heard a hydrogen peroxide mixture can help with that problem in cacti but that person could've been an idiot.

Huh. Would I just add it to the water? I don't really water it right now though since it's been raining so much lately.

I can't see a real problem, let it dry out.

Alright cool. That's what I was hoping for.

*EDIT: Also just wondering, but can I saw off the fibers that are sticking out of the stalk, just for visual purposes...  :hook:

Just keep watching out though, if it seems to get worse you'll have to cut, but right now it seems ok

Meh, thats just normal mildew man, all of my cut cacti get that while they are outdoors. It can cover the entire top of the cactus in a thick black layer, but will never do any harm. If you dont likes the look of it though, you could mist it with hydrogen peroxide, or simply moisten the callous, and gently scrap away with your fingernail or other utensil.

That's the vascular ring, just leave it, you can cut it if you want.

i would spray it with a fungicide solution, h2o2 works.

if you leave it then it will just go away when the weather is drier, not a huge problem

So it's safe to spray with a h2o2/h2o solution, directly onto the callous?

Also on a side note dealing with hydrogen peroxide. I'm taking a mint cutting from my garden and am going to root it in soil, indoors. Should I add a tiny amount (bottle cap full?) of H2O2 to the water to prevent from molds or fungi from developing?

I would sprinkle powdered activated carbon on it. Enough to cover the whole surface over with a thin layer.

Stop using science!
Yes, the spray is safe to use on the callous also yes the mint idea sounds good, baking soda is also used when diluted in water to prevent some kinds of mildew.

Fiiiiiiiiine.
Powder some charcoal, it's not as good as activated carbon, but it should still work. Not the kind with built-in lighter fluid, lol.

yes, so long as it is allowed to dry completely after application.

fungusy isn't a word in the english dictionary lol

if i had made the charts i would have done it with litres and millilitres so that everyone would easily understand it, not cups and bathtubs lol

it's obviously ripped from an american site :smirk:
