Distilling Apparatus work in progress (pictures)
    #10142758 - 04/10/09 04:17 PM (4 years, 1 month ago)

Okay so I decided to building a distilling column from copper parts I found at the local lowes. Below is designs I drew the other day and I got a majority of the parts for it today and pieced it together.

I still have to do some drilling and cleaning before I can start soldering the pieces together. Still trying to figure out how to attach the bottom of it to a lid of a large pot.

The main column is 2 inches in diameter and 24 inches long. The copper coils are 1/4 inch diameter.

Here are some pictures for you all

Well done good buddy!

A couple points I would like to point out is,

Its nice to be able to pull off the top of the main column.  So its easier to clean.

Also for a "pot" those 5 gallon pop kegs work wonders.  They have a lid with a good gasket and it has threaded holes so you can easily add more "mash" and drain out the used.

And please use some quality solder..  just because it says lead free, doesn't mean it doesn't have any lead.

Good luck man.

I made a small change in the plans after remembering how much i hate soldering multiple small pieces together. originally i was planning on using the cold water in and out to add extra reflux to the distilling apparatus which would require drilling 2 holes through the colomn and running tubes through it and making it seamless. I decided not to do that and to just attach some plastic tubing to the condensor and have the bottom one have a garden hose attachment. The column is all soldered and everything, just needs a good cleaning and yes i know some of my soldering joints are slightly sloppy. Oh well cause its all sealed off so it should work. Still need to get a good pot or keg to attach the 2 inch male adapter to.

thats funny, i just ran mine last night.

believe me! you want a bigger head than that, or you'll be drip drip all day long.

heres mine set up as a pot still w/ out the second reflux column."was running a batch of rum"

but having the extra reflux is money when your doing vodka!

heres mine

Is that still from mile hi distilling? I got a Mr Disiller from them and love the shit out of it. I'm just making this column out of boredom. have only put 15 dollars into it from my own pocket so far cause I used up a gift card i had for lowes and never used.

it's the same 1 they sell. it's a brewhaus. i got it from somewhere else a few years ago for like $60 less than what they sell it for. i cant find the website anymore:(
they are great there. everything my local brewshop doesn't have i get from them.
looks like you did a pretty damn good job, and for 15 bucks you cant go wrong.

i wanna build a big 1 this summer. i havent given it much thought but a huge head with a 50gal tank would rock.

i've seen some big bastards that flow like a bath tub faucet.
dont know what i'd do with that much hooch.;)

i had trouble finding a pot too, which is why i broke down and bought this 1. everything i could find was galvanized.

let me know, i'm curious to see what you find.

Actually with the two inch pipe you will get alcohol at a relatively fast pace, the diameter of the pipe is what dictates the amount of product which is distilled, the height of the column is what controls the purity of the spirit, it provides more reflux, it is based on theoretical "plates" in the distilling world.

Since you decided to forgo the original idea and are going to go with the leibig condenser, if it does not work as you wanted you could always remove the top of the column and make an internal condenser as you already have the copper tubing. You would then pretty much have a basic easy to maintain bokabob still.

If you plan on making quality neutral spirits (vodka) then drip, drip all day long is not a bad thing at all. Are those supposed to be copper scrubbers in the picture you provided? If so, you will want a return valve to allow alcohol to go back into the column to run at reflux.

I would suggest going to yahoo groups and looking up new distillers.  It has tons of info, recipes, still designs, etc.  Also homedistillers.org is the reference bible for all new distillers,

Good luck
