Anywhere to look around Sydney? Or would it be best I go for a bush walk out in Katoomba or something...

Id say so, looking at the BOM it hasnt been getting much colder than 15 celcius. so i would imagine the subs are still in thier little sub caves.
does anyone know more about the cold shock they need, does it vary at all?

Wow I'm suprised you managed to spot these so early in the year. I didn't expect the season to begin for another 2 months at least. It just isn't that cold yet. Anyway nice finds!

Any mountainous areas will generally be a bit colder, shaded areas are great too. I found mine up in the mountains, cold winds racing off the slopes along with a week of rainy weather has helped kick 'em off. When temps drop down to around 15 degrees with minimum temps under 10 degrees, with a good soaking of rain they start poppin up

Cheers, I generally hunt from mid April-Late July/start of August. Ya just gotta know where to look

OH HELL YEAH! Ive been waiting for ages for this thread to start up. Ive been sitting here watching all the rain wev'e had here in NSW over the last few weeks and the massive drop in temps and I had hoped the season would start up a bit earlier. Time to get my A into G and get down to dem southern tablelands i think!

LOL meanies and cubes in a NSW subs thread i love it nice finds!
Hey sanchey you always get the early finds.. and the biggest too if i remember your super patch of a few years ago.
AdrianPsy: Why not? worth a look... still not cold enough IMO but could be wrong, i'll definitely have a quick look around some known patches tomorrow just to check.
Nobitte: Cold shock = a few days of sub 10 degree minimums, and low maximums helps as well. Add to that a lot of rain and they should fruit.
The best site for this is this one. Just change for whatever location you want to know about. If you get a few days in a row with blues below 10 and precipitation in double figures then it's probably a good sign.

Nice finds Nobbite, I take it you are Northern NSW Lucky buggers, the rest of us further South have to be content with 'only' Subs

msanchez, I love those pictures from previous hunts, espescially the 1st one on the second row, great caramel colours.
Beginner question, are they all cyans or subs?
