Australia - Sydney ID Request
#10199207 - 04/20/09 03:07 AM (4 years, 1 month ago) |

Well, it's about time I believe. I haven't had much luck up in the Blue Mountains over the weekend but I think it was a little dry. A few friends had some luck a little earlier in the week. I also went poking around in Lane Cove today, found a bunch of non-actives. Photos follow... ID's anyone?

How's everyone else going?

That place is legendary, you are lucky to be able to visit it whenever you want.
1) Tubaria furfuracea 2 - 3) Maybe Amanita 4) Maybe Amanita 5 - 6) Psathyrella 7) Maybe turkey tail 8) Maybe Coprinellus micaceus

LOL are you trying to get my only local patch raped Alan?
To everyone else: Lane Cove has NOTHING in it. NOTHING!! HONEST
Very nice inactives, very beautiful and very critically endangered inactives (that should not be disturbed in any way!!) in both the suburb and the National Park, but for actives, frankly i would spend more of my time out west (and i do). Much colder away from the coast and more chip beds too.

My first shroom finds were in LC last year, good luck, i might be heading out there shortly myself, but a lot of the best places have had fresh woodchips put over them now.

Yeah i found a lot of fresh woodchips around the place too... luckily not in -> the patch <- (that doesn't actually exist) but everywhere else. Even if they cover it up with chips they're just giving the myc for food to fruit later..
By West i mean Western Sydney (inner and outer, lots of woodchips around the place out there) and the mountains as well. I just find the NShore parks a bit -too- well cared for, with fresh chips and whatnot. I'm going to have a hunt in the LCNP and a related area for inactives tomorrow and hopefully find some cool finds.

Went back again today... found a few more inactives...

And some greenery...

Inner and outer west you say? So you mean like the parks around Enmore / Marrickville and such would be a good place to look when it's a little colder here in Sydney?
I think I'll take a trip up to the Blue Mountains tomorrow. Katoomba's been hitting below 9 degrees and the RH is around 98% with a bit of rain (10mm a day for the last two days...)

What were they growing from? Those are stains as in from being handled? Kind of looks mold like. I'm not sure.

They were growing in wet grass. Stains are from being handled, yup - not mold.
Lactarius deliciosus you say? The name suggests they're rather tasty... is this the case?

Yea they grow under pine.

Only if you prepare them well.
Try cutting them up into little strips and frying them in your oil of choice until they turn brown.
Or cut them into thin slices and put them on a greased baking sheet, add a very small amount of seasoned salt and bake at 400 degrees until they turn into little brown crispy chips.
Or just cook them up like normal, they have an interesting texture.

LOL yes i found out the hard way about Lactarius so-called 'deliciosus' last night.. Eat them raw and you get a really bitter aftertaste.
JJ they were probably growing in grass, but they only grow under pine trees. Same with the Amanitas and most good edibles.

They were indeed growing under a couple of pine trees!
Thanks Alan, I'll try frying them tonight in some olive oil. Mmm..
