Why don't the seeds I bought from produce at the store sprout?

I've tried several varities of fruits and vegetables from the produce I buy at the grocery store, and none of them sprout. I've tried tomatoes, grapes, oranges, and several flower seeds I bought in a packet, but none of them sprout.

it's pry because the majority of the produce we buy doesn't ripen on the vine. most produce is picked green and ripens in the box.

possibly not ripe enough when picked possibly genetically modified to produce non-viable seeds possible irradiation before transport
most fruit seeds like oranges and cherries require cold shocking in the fridge for 3 months, much like hops or ginkgo biloba etc seeds like pumpkin, squash, beans etc should be dried mostly, before planting.
etc etc look up info on how to sprout the particular seed your trying to sprout, i remember i struggled for a long time to sprout prickly pear seeds, even "sproutable" seeds from a pack from a gardening vendor, and finally found the best method was to mix the seeds in with a prickly pear fruit and let it rot over the soil outside
go figure
good luck, be with you.

ive had success sprouting some apple seeds from produce and im still waiting on some cantaloupe and blackberry's. im gonna try mangoes once i eat em :nomnom:
i was suprised when the apples came up, bc like capt said, i thought they were modified to produce non viable seeds (f u monsato).
ive had success sprouting the store bought packets but i question there genetics. damp 50/50 topsoil/peat is what i use but im no expert. leaving the seeds in water overnight might help, but most take 2 weeks to sprout.
dont mean to thread jack but can someone fill me in on the difference between an organic seed and an in-organic one? is it worth the extra $1?

you know every seed is a different fruit, and most apples are deemed inedible due to poor texture/taste/etc and that it takes years for them to go into fruit?
beautiful trees none the less.

Unless a seed packet states that the seeds have been treated with something (usually a fungicide like captan or an innoculant for peas) about the only difference I know of is that the seeds come from an organic farmer. I think it takes about 3 yrs of a farm being certified organic before their seeds can be certified organic. Usually only expensive hybrid corn seeds are treated btw.
Personally I'd put more emphasis on finding heirloom seeds than organic ones. Of course purchasing those seeds is supporting organic farming and that's a big plus.

It has nothing to do with the organic/inorganic certification. To get one of these seeds to grow you must simulate it's natural environment.
If after an apple was produced by a tree it fell to the ground and immediately germinated it would soon die as the cold temps in the fall would kill the young seedling.
Therefore you must put the seeds in the frig as many seeds need exact amount of chilling time before they will germinate. Other seeds need to be dried first then re-hydrated to grow. Some need to be soaked in acid to simulate going through the GI tract of birds. Others even need to be in a forest fire before germination can take place.
Many trees grown from seeds wont exhibit the same traits as did the trees from which they are derived. That is why many trees are cloned vs. seed grown. If you really want to grow plants it would be far easier to cut a stem from a tree, dip in rooting hormone, place in moistened perlite in a cup, cover with plastic baggie and wait.
As for the store bought seeds, as long as they are kept moist and warm they should germinate. If not they could be old. For specific requirements for germination of various seeds I would just do a basic search on the net.
Good luck
