On April 21 at 8pm, Peter Werner is doing a presentation on the Psilocybe of California, as well as other Strophariaceae and other active mushrooms occurring in CA.
The lecture will be presented at the MSSF (Mycological Society of San Francisco) meeting, in the Randall Museum.
Doors open and identification starts at 7pm (meet and greet, refreshments, merchandise), and the meeting starts at 8pm (announcements, lecture).

It means that if anyone found any mushrooms that they want identified, they can bring them to the meeting between 7-8pm, spread them out on the tables provided, and then those members good at identifying will likely flock to the tables and start putting names on the mushrooms.

I don't know where else to put this, but a friend sent me this article about a bunch of herbarium species saved and sent back to China
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090413/ap_on_re_us/mushrooms_repatriated
note at the end they say the Japanese destroyed many herbarium specimens. I think Peter Werner once said we only had one herbarium specimen of japanese psilocybe subaeruginascens...in Chicago? and that didn't match up exactly with what's growing here now
keep us posted if there's any updates on that species at the lecture

I spoke with Peter last night and I think he said he was going to try and take some micrographs of the P. subaeruginascens-like species found in the Bay Area.
BTW - This is a GREAT photo.

Thanks for posting this, CureCat. The talk is kind of eclectic, about both actives (bluing Psilocybe, plus a bit about active Panaeolus and Gymnopilus) and inactives (non-bluing Psilocybe, plus Kuehneromyces and Phaeogalera). Some material on the history of Psilocybe on the West Coast and present taxonomic status of this group.
Here are directions, and more info about the lecture from the Mycena News:
Tuesday, April 21, 2009. MSSF General Meeting. Randall Museum. 7pm: mushroom identification and refreshments provided by the Hospitality Committee. 8pm: Peter Werner will discuss the Psilocybe and Allies of California.
http://tinyurl.com/cjzym9 http://www.randallmuseum.org/Default.aspx?tabid=95
Peter Werner is a long-time member of MSSF and has been involved in mycological pursuits since the early 1980s. His academic ! study of mycology began at University of Washington and continued as a graduate student at San Francisco State University, where he was working on a thesis project, a monograph of the Psilocybe species of California under advisor Dennis Desjardin. Peter is also an avid photographer and microscopist, and recently completed a professional certification program in microscopy at Merritt College.
Peter will be speaking on Psilocybe and allies of California, as well as other psilocybin mushrooms of the state. His talk will include discussion of recently-discovered species from California, as well as the taxonomic issues surrounding the classification and naming of Psilocybe and its relatives.

Awesome, thanks for reminding me about this!
Were you able to do some microscopy on the Psilocybe subaeruginascens sensu Guzman samples?

I hope you don't miss it either. I might have to miss it, but for those that can attend, I recommend recording it on mp3, posting it online, take photos, take notes
I would seriously resist any attempt to contain the lecture within that room, that night. It should be made wider public knowledge since there's more than one species that is absolutely new to California and the San Francisco Bay Area
THE Mycological Society of San Francisco is not likely to pat you down for recording equipment like they do at the Fillmore (heh), so go for it
Naw, the MSSF is pretty cool about this, but just watch out for some folks yapping about locations after the lecture (because that's mostly bullshit)
actually, a little history, up until about 2000, most people associated with psilocybe, including lecturers, had to go out back and chat during the meets. It was sort of like hush hush and a dirty little secret. I remember one of the telephone answering machine messages from back in 1997, if you called the MSSF
a stern voice > >while we recognize that psilocybe is a natural part of our habitat, we cannot recommend it at this time, due to the delicate nature of it"
You won't hear or see that anymore, at all. Today it's much more accepted and open. Pretty much because even the top people eventually had to admit that even psilocybe is part of the general mushroom kingdom, whether they like it or not, and that the study of it is true science, just like any other species
It's just natural science, pure and simple
one of the new species Peter Werner will be discussing
psilocybe subaeruginscens, san francisco, 2009

Nice to see the change in attitude in mycology. I would have attended just to hear about your mushroom but my car wouldn't have made it to Kansas, let alone San Francisco.
Word on the Fillmore: Amazon is offering a pre-order on the DVD, "Last Days of the Fillmore." I saw the movie when it came out. I'll definitely be buying it. Release date, June 2nd.

Wow, don't put any pressure on me or anything.
Seriously, this is actually the very first time I've given this talk, and the scheduling was kind of on short notice (MSSF *seriously* dropped the ball on this one, scheduling me based on an informal conversation I'd had last year, then not even informing me until the very end of March that I was in fact scheduled to speak!)
Not to say that I won't have lots of information that will be interesting and informative to the my fellow Cal Psilocybe fans, but the lecture is going to be kind of impromptu and "version 1.0" in nature.
I expect that early next year, I'll be giving a version of this lecture to SOMA (Santa Rosa) and Fungus Federation (Santa Cruz), maybe even BAMS (Berkeley), though I'm not sure how the latter is about booking a speaker/topic that was presented relatively recently by MSSF.
As far as recording it goes (say, MP3 or video + post the Powerpoint), the second or third time I give the lecture it will be more "field tested" and refined, and that's the version I'd want to record for posterity.
BTW, Auweia, would it be OK if I made use of some of the pictures you've posted over the last few years to Shroomery? You've got some good field pics.
