Spawn run - looks good, smells horrible.

A couple of my colonizing tubs have a strong, sharp smell coming from them, but they look to be colonizing ok. They arent going all that fast, but the bright white rizo growth is making its way through the sub. its wbs spawned to coir/verm/coffee/gypsum, my first grow without any manure. Obviously I believe it is some sort of contam...prob bacteria, and prob came from my jars before spawning.
Has anyone had anything come from a sub that gave off a bad smell during the spawn run? Are these subs doomed to failure? Ill post pics in an hour or so when i get home.
Thanks for the help guys.

Yikes !
Strong, horrible smells aren't good. It does sound like bacterial infection.
I have had strong, kinda funky smells .... more normal smells from moist manure and coir substrates at spawning. Then as the myc. grows the funky substrate smell was replaced with mushroom smells.
Time will tell. From my experience with bacterial infections, they will stall your myc. colonization. If the myc. continues to colonize, let it go and keep your fingers crossed.
Good luck.
edit: my smells that turned out ok were slightly funky substrate smells ..... the smell you describe as 'sharp' sounds bad.

I've had things that started off smelling a little sour but then pulled out later. If it started off ok but the stink is gaining momentum I'm going to say your are probably in for bad news. I've had smelly stuff appear to fully colonize only to be contaminated in the center and ultimately produce little or no fruit then the contamination takes over. I hope yours turn out better than that.

Well, taking that foil off and exposing it prior to full colonization is just going to slow you down. For small trays I would opt to use plastic wrap instead of foil. This way you can visually inspect the progress and check for contamination without introducing FAE. Light doesn't really matter during colonization.
If things are really smelling bad thats a good sign of contamination even if it isn't visible.

Bacteria is rarely a contaminant of bulk substrates. I suspect you got the mix too wet. Leave the foil off for a few days and let it dry out some. RR

Its very possible that i got the mix too wet. i wish i could explain the smell to you guys. it seems very acidic..stinks up my room a little. kind of like it could be toxic....but its not. It doesnt smell like a mold, or old water, or rotten apples or stinky feet. Ill take the foil off and see how it goes.

I have noticed when using more coffee in the sub, the mycelium tends to smell a little more like licorice (the confectionery) or something in the first few days. Its not a bad thing, but the smell takes a bit of getting used to. If the substrate smells sour, not like licorice or old spent coffee then you might have a problem.
Also the pics do look like the substrate is a little wet.

So heres the deal. I had 10 jars of this strain (GT) and spawned 9 to coir. All 3 subs smell bad. The last one I didnt use because it just didnt look right. I shook the jars, let them sit for a day or two, and one wasnt showing any good signs, so i left it out. Well, this is that jar today...8 days later.
Keep in mind. I also spawned 10 jars of PE and 10 jars of Koh Samui all colonized in the same batch of birdseed as the GT to the same batch of coir as the GT. The PE and KS are all doing fine. And to be honest, one of the GT subs is doing fine as well. Almost fully colonized, and giving less of the smell.

im thinking whatever is making this jar look like crap is causing the problems in the spawn run. Can anyone diagnose it? As RR suggested, I have pulled the foil off to let them air out a little. I think they are a bit wet.

Well, what was once white, is now green. Damn trich. And for some reason it was only my GT tubs. My PE and Koh Samui jars that were filled with the same batch of grain, and spawned to the same batch of coir, are doing just fine. I guess it was a contam in the print or the syringe, and just didnt show up during colonization. Weird. Anyways, since my crop will be depleated to about 2/3 of what i originally though i would be getting, im going to start on some new jars. I shall be inoculating them with PE tissue. Wish me luck.

Definitely contaminated with bacteria. Notice the melted ice cream look? Some growers describe it as 'grease' around the kernels. That's bacteria. It's why your substrate contaminated with molds too. The bacteria weakened the mycelium enough that the molds could take over. In fact, the molds were probably in the grains all along and you just noticed it when spawned to bulk and they sporulated. RR

I cant really tell from those pics, but I can tell you that everytime I ever incubated grain I had a polly fill lid for gas exchange and it always smelled very foul like rotting Body order! My wife gagged when she smelled it but everything colonized ok and I spawned mycoluv's rich mix!!! wich is the shit ( literally ) and they grew contam and smell free with bitchen results.
