My ip
    #10079646 - 03/31/09 10:02 AM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Can someone (non mod) be able to access my IP address from simply posting on a forum.  Could they ip sniff?

No, I don't think so. I'm not too into the programming side, but I feel qualified to answer this. There's nothing to sniff. If they were sniffing your connection then they already have your ip address, and if they're sniffing incoming packets from the server side then they already have way more information and you should be much more worried than them getting your ip address.

Why do you care anyways though?

So its possible that they could be sniffing for incoming packets from the server?  What is in a packet?  What info does it reveal?

Well no, they'd have to of compromised the server to do that. I mean, it's possible, in the sense that it's possible someone could take over your PC and be logging all of your activity or something, but it's very unlikely. I wouldn't be worried about it in the least.

They can, depending on how thorough the sniffer is, get everything from the packets. They can get where it came from, where it's going to, and the packet number (what that packet is in the sequence), this if they get them all they can put them all back together and get the data you were sending even. That's probably all the relevant information but there's a good bit more that you wouldn't care about. If the server had been compromised then they'd just check the logs and have your ip right there, no need for packet sniffing though.

No normal person can do this, no highly skilled person can do this, you gotta be trying rather hard and know your shit. If someone were this capable and for w/e reason after you specifically then there'd be far better ways than hacking into a server and getting your ip. There's not much you can do with an ip address. Why are you worried about this?

If someone was sniffing your packets to the shroomery server they could read your posts. Maybe your password, though I assume that's encrypted. But yeah, they could see what you're reading/writing.

But to sniff your packets they need either
a) close access to the shroomery server
b) close access to your computer (be in your house)
c) ISP-level access. This requires a warrant.

If some random schmuck on the internet finds out your IP they can't do jack, assuming you have a firewall or are behind a NAT. Even if you don't have those things they can't sniff your packets.
