Organ Donation.

I was just wondering how people feel about organ donation. I personally have been witness to the miracle of medicine that it it.
My little brother (21 at the time) passed away in september of 2007. We knew his wishes and were able to donate both of his kidneys and liver.
The kidney's were given to two men one 26 and one 71. And as far as we know they are still alive.
His liver went to an incredible guy who is 55 and who has 2 kids. My family and I have had the privelege to meet him. And it has brought great closure to us knowing that my brother lives on through him. He actually has told us that he didnt think he was going to live another 24 hours before he found out he was going to get a liver. He actually wrote us a letter one week to the day after the transplant.
Anyone who is hasnt thought about organ donation should give it some thought and those that have decided that they are for it great.. I know I am going to go through with it..
If anyone has any questions about donation please feel free to ask. I will be more than glad to dispel any myths you may have heard or let you know more about the process..

I'll donate my organs when i die. No doubt about it, i don't need them if i'm not around. I don't see why people don't donate their organs when they pass away.

Well I want to keep my fucking organs there mine. Thats how I look at it but, On the other hand why not give them up to someone that needs them? I did not have a choice I think it was cheaper to be a organ/D when you get you licenses.

organ donation is free. there is no charge to the family. infact the organ donation network takes over the hospital bills from the point that the papers are signed by next of kin.

nope. i don't agree with it. will not have my organs transferred, unless the situation absolutely warrants it and i feel it is appropriate, which would be pretty hard to convince me of

personally, i don't agree with modern medicine. too many people alive as is, imo. i don't go to doctors, unless absolutely necessary. even then, i don't take medicatin. if i die as a result of it, then i clearly wasn't a strong enough homo sapien sapien to live a full life
eating right, exercise, and stress reduction (aka. healthy living) should be enough to maintain health

Speaking of organ donations. Is there any organs that I don't need now, and will they pay?

so if a kid gets cancer because he was around secondhand smoke of 2 chain smokers for the first 18 years of his life, and now needs a lung transplant because of it, simply isn't a good enough homo sapien to live?

that is actually a common myth.. just because your family signs the papers to allow organ harvesting at the time of your death. it does not give the doctors permission to stop treating you. By signing the papers it actually allows the organ harvesting team to use "experimental" procedures to stabilize you. So they have time to find matches and run all the test they need to do.. And then there are two protocols in which they can harvest your organs.
1. Brain Death This is where there is no more brain activity and they only thing keeping you alive are the respirator, drugs and any other machines they hook the donor up to. Pro's - This is the preferred and protocol for donation. Con's - It can take days or weeks for brain death to occur.
2. Cardiac Death This is where the family is allowed to discontinue life support, if the doctor and the family believe there is no chance of recovery. Pro's - The donor isn't left to linger on life support for days or weeks. Con's - Most hospitals have not done this and it may take some legal fighting to allow this to happen
(This was the case with my brother and it was a legal fight with the hospital and the state attorney general was involved. But we were allowed to discontinue life support and he became the first donor through cardiac death at this particular hospital)
In both cases the doctor is required to keep treating you till the donor passes away or the family discontinues life support.

In the US it is illegal to sell your organs. you can dictate that family and friends or who ever you want get first shot at being a match. but you can not sell them

Or we could use stem cells to manufacture organs in laboratories.
They would be perfect because it'd be our own organs. They'd have our DNA, same blood-type, and exact dimensions based off of your DNA to fit perfectly within you.

I was cleaning out my wallet and found my donor card. Was going to make a similar thread earlier but got caught up doing a few things.
Anyway, I completely agree with it. If my death reduces the suffering or loss of someone else, it means the world to them. I'm already gone, so what does it matter to me? If my passing means helping someone stay here - if even just a month - and enjoy what life they have left to live, so be it.
My wish is to be cremated anyway. So, a life-saving organ, or a gram of ash? The 'tragedy' of my death to save at least one person? Totally worth it.
