going for my largest oyster grow...

making an attempt at the largest oyster grow i've done yet... I just measured out 150 cups of coffee, 100 cups of sawdust, and will be adding 25 cups of gypsum to it, then bringing it up to field capacity, and tossing it in poly-bags, then in the autoclave (i have no way to pasteurize this much substrate at the moment...giant clave will help with sterilization though, i can do it all in one run). I plan on doing a spawn transfer from rye grain, i already have 20 jars fully colonized, ready to go. Wish me luck! this sounds like a good sub, an does anyone have any advice?

I used a similar substrate a few times, and it fruited better when vermiculite was added. You might add either that or some straw to fluff it up. Wood chips would also help protect the substrate from packing too much.

i ended up making out those measurements, and looking at it, and thinking that it needed a bit more sawdust/shavings (i used this animal bedding crap which i got a big bag of for free...), so i added an unknown amount... just kept adding until it looked like it had some good body to it... I know i should have pasteurized it, but i haven't the means to pasteurize something of that size at the moment (otherwise i would have just done a big laundry basket or something) so i loaded them all into bags and autoclaved them at around 118 PSI for 60 minutes the night before last, then made my transfers from the jars last night. I can already see recovery/spreading of the spawn from some of the grains, wish me luck! i'll take some pics tomorrow when i get off work to show y'all whats i've got going on.

yeah dude, the clave kicks up a bit over 115, usually rests around 117-118.... makes it so you can do stuff for slightly less time. i've been running 50 minute cycles on my rye grains in the clave, and having absolutely no problem with contams. i'm finding that the recommended hour and a half is just over kill...

Your talking about 15 PSI at 118° C, or 250° F. Not 118PSI.

no, actually, i'm talking about 18 PSI.... seriously, i know what i'm talking about... i just made a mistake and added some ones... it ends up being i think around 122 degrees C... been having problems with my number keys on my keyboard lately, especially numbers 1 and 2, so i've often just been punching them twice out of habit because that's usually what it takes to get one entered in...

the pearl oysters, Pleurotus ostreatus. It's funny because my room mate has been finding shit tons of them out in the woods and bringing them home to eat, but oh well. i plan on giving these to friends and relatives mostly, and those who aren't as into the mush as i am are a little more wary of maggots... and my blocks shouldn't have any of those.

okay, so the bags were inoculated via grains spawn with P. ostreatus on Wednesday 5/7, this picture is from 5/8:

I LOVE how aggressive these little bastards are... i'm getting pretty good myc coverage on most of them, as the grains were mixed in pretty well to begin with, but some of them are showing heavy colonization one one side while the other isn't getting much (i just don't think much myc got over there...). Would it be advised to mash the bag up with my hands a little and mix it around? i would think this would essentially be like shaking a jar...? only difference is the jars are spawn, and these are fruiting subs.... but it would certainly speed up colonization....

okay, so these things are getting close to full colonization, i'm thinking by the end of the weekend... i was planning on sending a few of these things out like the fungi perfecti grow kits to friends and family members with easy plans for how to fruit them... figured i would send them right as they are getting to full colonization, before knotting happens, and tell them to just cut an X shaped slit in the plastic every 3 inches or so, then just set on the counter with a bag loosely over it (i know it's not ideal conditions, but it'll work and be cool for them...) or should i cut the slits myself before i box it and send it in case it start knotting before it arrives. Only risk i could see in this is them starting to fruit before it arrives, which wouldn't be the worst thing... opening a box to a fruiting block of mushies... what do y'all think?
