What a strange thing to say. I would venture a guess (I'm no criminal pathologist) that the guy being investigated was trying to get some leniency by offering information about another crime. Regardless, any cop who has been authorized to make comments to the media should have a list of useful phrases on hand, such as, 'at this time we have no information on the motive for the suspect to reveal details of this alleged crime'.
