How do I dispute collections/credit reports?

I'm getting a letter from a collections agency and I have no clue what its for... I am going to get a credit report to see if someone has stolen my identity.
The collections notice has no agency listed...some of the notices I got list the agency (best buy, the stupid fucking public library, etc).
Anyway, how do I dispute this stuff?

Go to the http://ficoforums.myfico.com/ website. I found a wealth of info there on letters you can write your creditors to work things out. If this debt is really not yours, read up on MOV over there, it is the Method of Verification they use to determine if the debt is yours or not. I've had debtors validate debts that were not actually real, and using the MOV turned out to be the real way to go about it. My FICO is part of the Fair Issac company that creates and manages the mysterious FICO scores, so this place is a great resource when looking at credit report related things.

I forgot to mention if the debt turns out to really be yours, you can read up over there on Pay-for-delete letters. Basically if you pay off a collection in full, it still shows a s a collection on your credit reports for 7 more years. Even a paid collection doesn't look good and hurts your scores. By using their sample pay-for-delete letter there, I just last month got a collection agency to delete the collection tradeline from all three reporting bureaus, AND only paid them half of the total due. I got a letter stating that the collections will be deleted within 10 days and that the debt is considered paid in full.
So that website saved me 7 years of BS! Imagine if I had just paid the dang bill and left it at that...
