Bruce Lee vs BJ Penn
    #8539272 - 06/19/08 12:40 AM (5 months, 11 days ago)

Who would win in an open weight mma match if Lee was alive and in his prime?

Honestly i think the only chance Penn would have is to take him off his feet.  Bruce Lee was said to have lightning quick punches, and kicks. Penn couldn't stand and trade with him.

Spoken by somebody too young to remember Bruce Lee in his prime.

spoken by somebody who believes BJ Penn is a Professional fighter and that Bruce Lee (while very skilled) was a martial-arts actor who was never put in an octagon with somebody and told to fight. yeah, he was pretty fast, but i guarantee you his fighting system has holes in it that wouldn't work in MMA.

Movie sets don't hit back. nor do they drop you to your knees and submit your ass. Do you think Jason Statham would be a good LHW fighter? he wouldnt break the top 20 list if he fought for 5 years.

BJ round 1.

Yeah, Penn in the first.  He'd jump on him and maul him, I don't believe Jeet Kun Do has any semblance of takedown defense whatsoever.

a professional actor? have you seen bruce lee's 1 inch punch? have you honestly? bruce lee could do pushups with his thumbs. can BJ penn do this? oh my god.. what a disgrace. go look up bruce lee in a match.

*edit* bruce lee was in matches. roughly 10 i believe. won them all except one where they tied. i think they were in hong kong or tokyo though.

You just don't understand the physics of a 135 pound guy who only knows stand up martial arts techniques and a 175 pound guy who's an amazing grappler and wrestler as well as a striker.

Yes I said it, physics!

do you think Bruce Lee would have five seconds and a still opponent in an MMA match? I can do a lot of impressive looking shit standing still with a maintained heart rate and no worry of getting my jaw broken. its different in a fight, especially against one of the arguably pound for pound best fighters alive.

BJ Penn probably doesnt waste time doing thumb pushups b/c he trains for real fights against top level opponents, not for movies. they dont choreograph UFC fights.

i mean, hands down, Bruce Lee would've taken Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme and Jason Statham in street fights. however, he wouldnt even do well enough climbing the LW UFC ladder to make it to BJ. on the off chance he did, he'd be crushed in under 3 minutes.

you probably also believe that Shaolin monks somewhere are not allowed to fight in the UFC b/c they would literally kill every fighter, LOL.

Not totally true because to take off of Lee's Wicki page

"Jujitsu

At 22 Lee also met Professor Wally Jay, and began to receive informal instruction in Jujitsu from him. The two would have long conversations about theories surrounding the martial arts and grew to be longtime friends."

So Lee was trained in grappling, by the man who created small circle Jujitsu, which is taken from Dan Zan Ryu... Dan Zan is a mix of Japanese style, and Hawaiian hand to hand fighting.

Striking..

"Bruce was also trained in Western boxing and won the 1958 Boxing Championship match against 3-time champion Gary Elms by knockout in the 3rd round. Before arriving to the finals against Elms, Lee had knocked out 3 straight boxers in the first round. In addition, Bruce learned western fencing techniques from his brother Peter Lee, who was a champion fencer at the time. This multi-faceted exposure to different fighting arts would later play an influence in the creation of the eclectic martial art Jeet Kune Do."

So Lee was trained in striking, and ground fighting..

Personally since he died  years before MMA was crafted there is no clue what he could have done in a MMA fight. Lee at his time was fighting, and beating guys in thier own styles. The man was as actor because he had a look. But if you check out his history, he was beating opponets in tournements, and open fighting events.  At his time  that was the only thing out there.

I  find this comment interesting on his page...

"In 2004, UFC president Dana White credited Lee as the "father of mixed martial arts."

Japanese Jujitsu is actually primarily a standing form of martial arts grappling.  I've still never seen anything to implicate he was well trained in ground combat, and I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan.

Oh nether have I.. The thing is i never knew half the shit about him till i read up on him personally, and it fascinates me i didn't know he could box, or he even studied any form of Jujitsu at all.

I am sure even if he was proficient in grappling it wouldn't have really been what we saw from him.  You got to think who really used it back in the 70s as a recognized fighting art?  That wasn't the scene. We live in a time where Sambo, BJJ, Judo and Muay Thai  are at the for front of fighting, and most fighters use it.  But back then who really knew what they were outside Judo being an Olympic sport.

One guy i can think to the rule is Lyoto Machida who says he has a Karate style, with some Jujitsu training.  The fucker is extremely hard to fight because you don't know what angle he will hit you from, and he can basically kick your fucking head off.  Personally after researching Lee i think this is how Lee would have been in MMA.  An extremely great  kicker, and striker from the kung fu, and boxing training he had. Along with the fact of the roots of his Jujitsu traing being tied in with Danzan which incorporates wrestling, and Hawaiian style bone breaking, and fighting in the jujitsu training.

Do i think he could have beat Penn? Again i personally looked at both evenly, and without knowing the full extent of Lee's ground skills, or grappling ill give it to Penn on the ground. Stand up, i stand by the fact Lee would have beaten Penn, due to the fact of Lee's extremely quick hands, and his boxing, and other striking arts training, and his far superior cardio, and endurance traing..

Hey I just thought the bastard was a fast puncher and kicker, and some fluff added on for movies.  But he was fascinated to learn, and train what ever style worked to beat an opponent, and incorporate it into a fight.

If you were a bruce lee fan you would know he was chinese and learned tai chai from his father then later learned wing chun gung fu and he also trained as a boxer. bruce lee fan.... thats

*edit* the jujitsu was not formal training. he was not a master of that by any means.

I am a Bruce Lee fan and I did know all of that.  I was simply clarifying that the type of Jits he was likely doing wasn't the same as BJJ.

Wasn't bruce lee really interested in incorporating judo into his training?  I thought I read something to do with that awhile back.
