is there any way to have a system set-up so that people that make really good threads, can know that they make really good threads?
im definitely not one of them, lol, but id like to find out who the top posters are.
other web forums have things like this. they have it set-up for the daily top-posters, weekly, monthly, yearly, and over-all. it's not a thread count, but takes averages of views, replies, etc.
sorry if this sounds dumb.

yeah, it would just give credit to people that are great posters. not permanent credit, but for the time being.
of course, the admin would probley want to set up the site so that refreshing one's thread couldn't be repetitively done, but im pretty sure that's not a hard thing to do.

Can you give me a link to a forum with this feature so I can get a better idea of what you're suggesting? Taking an average of anything is extremely resource intensive with our number of posts. If another BB has this implemented maybe I can look through the code and see how they did it. But off the top of my head I can't think of a simple way to add this.

Seeing as how what constitutes a "great" thread would vary so widely from person to person, I don't see this becoming much more than a popularity contest.

problem is that shit threads get as much attention as good threads... so basing it on views and replies wouldn't count for much...

this system would list the 'thread-starters' that generate the most attention.

otherwise it just wouldnt be fair, and "contributing" posters wouldnt get their acknowledgement.

i was also thinking of that too, maybe being able to give a main post in a thread "shrooms" much like the rating system, it could be a dropdown menu in the "post extras", and it would be live-time so it wont reload the page after you vote, much like how flagging a post on craigslist now just says "thank you" instead of reloading a new page.
all it would have to do is show the stars (or shrooms) rating somewhere near the title(under?), and when u mouse over tell you how many votes its comprised of.
just an idea, i think eDot forums are like this...

we used to be able to rate threads .. i'm pretty sure there was a decent reason as to why we no longer have it to, but i can't remember what it was.

well that's my point, attention does not equal good or bad, it is just attention wether the thread topic is highly informative or just a flame fest that everyone wants to get in on...
we were able to rate threads before, but that system is open to abuse so it was discontinued...
i really don't think ythan is going to be bothered to implement this and even if he does i can see it leading to people making loads of threads just to try and get the attention...
i think most people around here know who's posts they enjoy to read and have an opinion of who their "top posters" are anyway, so what does it matter?

A good or bad post is all in the eyes of the beholder. But, if the number of views or replys helps you determine this, you can currently just click on Views or Replies at the top of a forum and it will sort all of the posts that way.

it SHOULD be about the threads that get the most attention though. that would be the point of the whole thing...people that create threads that get viewed/replied in a lot would be noticed for it.
as for being able to rate threads, bad idea due to the abuse you mentioned.
but if for each person, the server automatically counted the number of replies for their threads and the number of views(of course, fix it so that refreshing wouldn't work or would be a pain in the ass) for their threads, then it could list them out and find the "Top Posters".

the point of this would be to credit them by hall of fame,  , well, something like that.
i was thinking maybe like...top 10 daily posters, top 10 weekly posters, top 10 monthly posters, top 10 yearly posters.
