A trip to Detroit
    #8411421 - 05/16/08 11:30 PM (6 months, 14 days ago)

In a nutshell, we got super fucking high and saw The Mars Volta in Detroit, Michigan. Read on for the details...

About a month ago, my best friend Ryan got a ticket to see The Mars Volta at the Fillmore in Detroit for his birthday. He suggested to me and our other best friend Pat that we buy tickets so we could go see them with him. So, after a month of waiting and planning, the two drive to my house in Pat's pick-up and we headed out in my car to Detroit.

A fourth of the ride there had passed and some Hun/Bubblegum (he wasn't sure) that Pat had brought was packed into a bowl and within one hit, I was blissed out. Usually, I just get middies or Purp' on occasion but this weed had so many crystals, it was sparkling. Mostly white with orange hairs; a stoner's wet-dream. Good thing we stocked up on Lipton Raspberry Iced Tea and Andes Mints before we took off because we had the munchies like crazy. Especially after we smoked a blunt of mids in addition to the Hun/Bubblegum.

During the ride there, we tried to just zone out and listen to The Mars Volta but we ended up talking the whole time. At one point, Ryan and Pat became worried about how I was driving, so once we got off the expressway, I let Ryan drive. The plan wasn't thought out too well because we ended up getting there at least 4 hours early. Although, it must be noted that we got perhaps the sweetest parking spot in the world.

We ended up walking to Johnny Rocket and got a bite to eat. It was quite odd to be in a city where we (white people) were the minority. We kept commenting to each other that it felt awkward. After we were done eating, we walked back to my car. The walk back was the most interesting thing to ever happen to me whilst high: my head felt like there was an unusual amount of pressure being exerted upon it and my vision looked like a comic book. Once we got to my car, we drove around for 10 minutes to kill some time and ended up parking at a parking garage next to a big empty space in the corner and played hacky-sac for a good hour. We used to play all the time but we rarely make time for it anymore , so it was nice to relive that childhood memory. Then, we walked over to Comerica Park and hung outside of it for awhile before I realized we left the hacky-sac in my car. We walked back to get it and returned to Comerica Park. Once back, we played hacky-sac for an hour-and-a-half. Eventually, Ryan came to the realization that his camera had died and we returned, once again, to my car. After we dropped the camera off at my car, we headed to the Fillmore as the doors had already opened.

There was already a line by the time we got there and they were patting people down so Pat had to hide his bowl in his shoe and his weed and 3 rolled blunts in a cigarillo case, which they never bothered to check. Once inside, we all got in line because Pat wanted a t-shirt (why we all got in line, I don't know). I was already in line and had some money to spend, so I bought a limited edition poster for $30 bucks (a bit much for a poster but it's super cool and looks like it was printed on white construction paper). It wasn't until somebody else brought it to my attention but I was angry with myself, due to the fact that I made the classic mistake of buying the poster before the show.

Eventually, the lights dimmed and another bowl of Hun/Bubblegum was packed. A few minutes before the band went on stage, we started to see the first few clouds of smoke (in a smoke-free building), so the bowl was hit and put into rotation. Eventually, some kids with weed offered to share their weed if they could use our bowl (theirs broke) and Ryan even sold a blunt for $10 to this other kid.

The show itself was fucking incredible. I'm not that huge of a fan of The Mars Volta (I like them and think they're very talented but I probably wouldn't buy an album of theirs) but I figured it'd be a fun thing to do with my two best friends. That being said, this was probably the most incredible show I've seen. It was sexual, emotional, energetic and just plain intense. Cedric Bixler-Zavala looked very much like a mix between Robert Plant and Jim Morrison with the way he moved about onstage. The show seemed somewhat improvised and most of the songs were newer and unfamiliar to me but it was one of the most incredible experiences to hear the trippy guitar effects, the quirky saxophone/guitar duel, and odd time-signatures showcased in the drums. The light show was an added bonus to the powerful performance this band put on. There were pits forming here and there but nothing too big and me and my friends didn't really feel like moshing anyway.

Halfway through the show, a blunt was pulled out and put into rotation between Ryan, Pat, and myself. The blunt was at least halfway gone when a huge black guy in a bright-red shirt came over and escorted Ryan and Pat away. I stood there dumbfounded. I was torn between not wanting to desert my friends but still wanting to get my money's worth. After a good 5 minutes, they came back like nothing had happened (I later found out that Ryan was forced to throw out the un-smoked blunt and the currently-lit one in order to avoid being caught with weed and kicked out. The guards ended up letting them back in.) We all stood trance-like for a good hour or so before we ended up getting tired of standing and went up to sit in the balcony for the last 15 minutes of the show.

The ride home was pretty uneventful (aside from a possible lighter theft not realized until the following morning) but it was interesting to note that we couldn't hear a fucking thing if it wasn't within a foot of us, lol.
