 Anybody taken antibiotics for tooth pain?

I had a severe toothache on Sunday night and the next day they gave me penicillin to take every six hours until it runs out. So that's a little over 24 hours.
Do you know how long until the infection will be gone? And the pain?

they only gave u 24 hrs worth? normally itd be almost a weeks worth, every 6 hrs (except sleep)...also they normally give you hydrocodene for the pain at the same time...
should take a few days for you to feel better but you are supposed to finish every dose to prevent the bacteria from becoming immune

Sorry, I meant 24 hrs since I started taking the penicillin. It is 28 pills so yeah, a week's worth. I guess I was expecting more relief by now.
I do have some hydro but I am stingy on those. So if it gets too bad they are handy- I just hope the antibiotics will do the trick soon on its own.

Took me 4 weeks dude, had a root canal, got infected, took antibiotics, pain didn't go, they pulled the tooth then i had soft antibiotics for 2 weeks, then had strooong ones for another 2 weeks, they were fkin trippy pills.
I had a bitch of an infection tho!

Yeah I've been on antibiotics for tooth pain, about a week or two of antibiotics followed by a root canal and then my mouth felt so much better. Everyone always bitches about how root canals hurt but it was like instant relief in my head.

Its not for pain, its for infections.So they wont start up and head towards to the heart and thou the body.To a knee that had so work done on it.You may have to do this for a year or two. After the work is done....Be sure to eat some yoget, so you have some stuff in your body...

The antibiotics are not specifically for the pain but by relieving the infection ( and swelling which presses on nerve endings) they do eventually remove the pain.
Thanks for all the responses. I am feeling much better now after a few days of penicillin. But Sunday was no joke. I found myself fantasizing about driving a railroad spike into my jaw to burst the built-up pressure causing the blinding pain.
I am saving a couple of antibiotic pills and pain pills if it returns because they can't do the root canal until mid September. And I'm not really in any hurry to have that done but I will eventually.

finish your antibiotics, it might not totally be gone yet and if it comes back your doc/dentist can and will perscribe you more.

I was in agony for a week after some gum surgery, thought it was infection but it was simply "inflammation". Holy shit, felt like someone kicking me in the face every morning.
Now I'm on the steroids (Prednisone I think) and the pain went away with the quickness. It's nasty shit I hear, but it worked on the swelling within the hour of the first dose.
Antibiotics take some time....
