I really hate dumb people too sometimes and it makes me feel bad. I'll try to think about their positive qualities but sometimes all they have is the ability to piss me off.

We're all less than brilliant in our own ways, so I think it would be highly hypocritical to hate on someone for the faults they can't control, especially for being less apt than you are at spotting scams. Why does it bother you so much that your friend wastes his money looking for rocks? If he enjoys it, why not let him do his thing and be happy? I can understand disliking him for ripping you off in the past, but for sheer stupidity...

Probably because it gives you a chance to feel superior, to offset your regular feeling of inferiority.
In my life I've spent a lot of energy condemning people in my head, telling myself and others that another person is stupid because of what they do or say. I can see now that the only reason to do this is to momentarily convince myself that I am indeed okay, that I'm not as useless as I feel. It's just a way of boosting the ego. Can you name another reason to condemn someone? It becomes a bad habit very quickly.
To the precise extent you can't stand other people, you can't stand yourself. This is always true in my experience.

"My children," said an old man to his boys scared by a figure in the dark entry, "my children, you will never see any thing worse than yourselves." As in dreams, so in the scarcely less fluid events of the world, every man sees himself as colossal, without knowing that it is himself. The good, compared to the evil which he sees, is as his own good to his own evil.

Is there anyway to prevent that? I try as hard as I can, but whenever the person comes into the mind I can't help myself.
"*bleep* is sooo FUCKING stupid... *bleep* is soooo FUCKING stupid.... no no no don't think that.... *bleep* is okay.... *bleep* is okay.... *bleep* is okay and so FUCKING stupid!!"
That's how it goes in my mind. I'll try my best to think positive about the person in question but it won't happen. Then I ignore him, which works until he talks and then it all starts again. It doesn't help that he's the dumbest person ever!

You can't really stop those thoughts from happening; they are conditioned responses and they just appear. But you can learn to not take them seriously, and refrain from verbalizing them internally or externally.
The mind is constantly reacting to everything it sees with exaggerated, judgmental thoughts. Unfortunately we confuse these thoughts with facts. One of the mind's goals is to build your ego by identifying ways in which others appear to be inferior. You can learn to observe this phenomena as it occurs, and remember to let go of that self-centered thought before you buy into it and make a derogatory comment. If you know it's just your mind stroking your ego, you will soon want to opt out of playing that childish game.
Get into that habit, and the nasty thoughts will occur less.

QFT. This statement is MUCH MUCH more important than it might seem at first glance. I recommend regular meditation on the idea that thoughts are not facts. It seems to me that much of our self-imposed emotional illness could be healed if we truly understood and applied this idea.
