simple psilocin question about its deterioration when dehydrated?
    #8381127 - 05/09/08 09:26 AM (6 months, 23 days ago)

I have read that once fully dehydrated that the psilocin has been nearly all deteriorated, can psilocin be preserved if cold brewed immediately after fruiting?

Psilocin has been recovered from and found in dried specimens. A good chunk is probably lost if you don't dry it correctly, but I don't think it's worth worrying about.

The question was: can psilocin be preserved if cold brewed (tea) immediately after fruiting? Anyone with any knowledge about its oxidation with a cold brew tea technique???

This is an interesting idea that I'm pretty sure I've never heard of anyone trying. I don't know that the psilocin would make its way out of the fruitbodies and into the water, but there is only one way to find out.

How about extracting it with liquid ammonia at -33oC? That should help avoid thermal and oxidative decomposition. And supercritical CO2 has been used to decaffeinate beverage products so why not give it a try for some other alkaloids?

um...

i dont know about preserving a "tea"

I know of people who soxhlet extracted psilocin from mushrooms then kept the alcohol and made a absinthe kind of thing.

that kept rather well.

if you do that make sure you soxhlet with 70% ETHANOL.

Are you serious?

Seems kind of foolish to even bother pointing this out but #1 is a highly controlled and regulated meth precursor that is quite dangerous and hard to work with and #2 requires about $50,000+ in equipment.

Ah, theft! - the best solution for obtaining expensive and/or controlled materials! Yes, I was suggesting dry ammonia by saying liquid ammonia. Presumably Windex is some kind of proprietary brand of ammonia solution. Not the same as liquid ammonia.

I appreciate that partial irony can be hard to cope with. You're right on all 3 counts BUT it can't be bad to throw in some ideas about using unusual solvents here. I apologize for having an imagination and only limited scope for actually carrying out 99.9% of my ideas:drugnerd::grin: The line of thought was: 1) Low temperatures; 2) Polar solvents other than water.

While these ideas might not be immediately practicable, I think it's useful to get them out because SOMEBODY might eventually give it a try. Psiloc(yb)in research does still occur in properly equipped laboratories and there may yet be sound reason for using an extraction method besides aqueous butanol/ethanoic acid.

And how about Soxhletting with water under reduced pressure (= lower boiling temperature)?

176f is the boiling point at sea level for 70% ethanol

how reduced? 70% Ethanol is what you wanna use.
