Help me build a laminar flow hood please.
    #7979510 - 02/04/08 07:44 PM (9 months, 25 days ago)

I searched a few older posts and have a basic idea of what to do. But can you all help put together a list of parts for a functional laminar flow hood? I have about $250 to get this done.

Please help

If I used these filters: http://cgi.ebay.com/_W0QQitemZ320211547906QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And matched up a blower to them, woudl that work?

I would get 2 of those filters and have 48" of workspace.

this hepa filter seems to fit well in your budget
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320211547906&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011

now it's rated at 99.97% at .03 microns. can anyone verify if that's a substantial filtering rate for a flow hood?

mdf board to build your box, ideally you want to find a blower that will match your filter. You're probably not going to find the data chart for a fan if you're buying it used.a 1/3-1/2 hp squirle cage blower should work(something that's overly powerfull that you can slow down to the proper pressure), a voltage controller to control the fan, a prefilter of some sort. various screws fasteners rtv kinda stuff. that should basicly be all you need. i'd suggest ohmatics flowhood post because it already has a schematic with measurements for aproximatly the same size filter

hmmm looks like you already found the filter I suggested while making my post.

Where is ohmatics post?
I suck at math and would have the hardest time trying to figure out what fan to use. I'll probably just get the 1/2 hp and a voltage regulator and adjust it from there. I sent the guy and offer for two filters. From what I can tell, 99.97 will work and those filters have a static pressure of 1.4". So it should need a fan that would push about 875 cfm, from what I can tell.

I need help, bad.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5569636#5569636

the measurements are metric just remember 25.4 mm to one inch. if you look at his last picture he redesigned it to be taller with the fan area above instead of behind that way would save a lot of space in your lab area.

oh and you don't need a fan that can just push 875 cfm. you need one that can push that much at 1.6" static pressure(giving you and extra .2" from the prefilter)

Not quite. It says if you push 2,000 cubic feet per minute through the filter, it will develop 1.4" of static pressure in the plenum behind it. You want far less flow than that, so you'll be running at a lower static pressure. A blower rated at 500 cfm @ 1" static pressure will do the trick.

Thanks. Read that several times. That's actually where I got the link for the filter. Good info.

To diffuse the air, I saw something on mythbusters once, where they were making a wind tunnel. They took straws in boxes of 500"?" and cut them in half. THen they made a "wall" out of them and it made a relatively smooth flow of air. Would something like that help a cheaper hepa flow hood out?

I found a blower from granger that will push just a tad under 500cfm @ 1" for $199.25, or one that will push just a tad over 500cfm @ 1" for 217.00. I don't want to spend that much money, but they are at least new and under warranty. What do you all think?

you might look on ebay I got a 500 CFM blower @ 1" SP for 70 bucks..
plus 20 shipping .. it was a steal ! but look for a new one not a used one .. good luck on it .. my flow hood is 24 x 24 x 11.5 and the blower works great .. I use a K&N filter to restrict and filter the incoming air ..good luck with your build

I remember that mythbusters episode.. with the straws that should work well to help even the flow going into the filter but it seems like alot of work and the results may not be worth the effort

The latter. You can always block part of the intake off to cut down on flow, but the increased capacity will be nice a few years from now as the filter starts to clog.

Well, the fellow accepted my offer for $25 each on those filters. $40 shipping though! Ouch! Next I am working on getting a blower. I called the local HVAC shop and they are seeing what they have that would push 500cfm @ 1".
We'll see.

ok i'm just wondering what i'm missing. if he is running 2 of the filters side by side to have a 24"x48" work area wouldn't the 8 square feet surface area and the 100 fpm laminar flow make it roughly 800 cfm. I've read through the fungifun flowhood section a few times. i'm just a little lost here.

I just read the article again also, it seems that I would need 800 cfm by that calculation......

Help please?

I think 24x48 us way overkill but whatever floats your boat
the specs on that filter say 1.4 resistance in W.G? whats that?
you are going to need one helluva blower for both filters
my blower is loud so yours is going to require hearing protection for long periods..
