Your take on photo-enforced red lights
    #8434764 - 05/22/08 09:36 PM (5 months, 27 days ago)

Coming back from the movies today we were behind this truck, and he CLEARLY blew a red light, and a few bright flashes went off. I said "Oh that sucks, he's busted" and my friend driving said "No, that wasn't the cops, that was just that dude flashing his brights at him." I explained how a few lights in the area are photo enforced (I think it's just at night, but that might because I just notice the flashes at night.) He started saying how it was huge bullshit, and I disagreed. Another friend in the car originally joined in on his side (apparently they've done that for a few years in his area in Illinois but are doing away with it), but quickly changed his tune once the driver and I made a few points.

So what do you guys think? Is it bullshit that lights are photo enforced, or do you think it's legit, and why?

No one is debating whether it is real or not, I'm trying to figure out how people feel about it.

you can put reflective screens on your plates and you can cover your vehicles vin with a business card. That should cover you.

I heard a story about a guy who knew he was gonna get shot passing a red, so he just covered his face w/ a newspaper and they couldent prove it was him driving.

I know a cool as trick for those camera including red lights. If you decide to run a red light make a sneezing action while your running it. If it takes a picture of you going through a red light while your sneezing, in court you can say you were sneezing and thats an act of god. And an act of god cant be punished in our court system. A rock falling off a dumpster truck onto your car window and breaking it is an act of god. You have to pay for it.

They have them in emeryville and they are pretty vicious. People get hit all the time because someone else slows down or stops in the intersection, leaving them hanging out in the middle to get photographed.

I was talking to a chick that worked at Trader Joes right by one of the busiest stoplights in emeryville and she says when she goes out for a smoke break she will usually see 3 or 4 people busted in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette.

A lot of the boxes are made by Raytheon, and 80% of the $220 fine goes to Raytheon with the last bit going to the city.

Government contractors...hard at work.

We don't have any of them around here. In fact I think there are only a few counties in my State that use them. I don't make it a habit to run red lights, but it's nice to know that if I do by accident I'll be safe from penalty.

Just the local governments turning more blood out of a stone. It's fucking bullshit, and I think it's very Orwellian. I fucking hate them.

Interesting that law enforcement is becoming more interested in making money than actually protecting the people. But it's always been that way.

i've contemplated how they could be taken out like that, but the thing is that they guard each other. There are 2-4 per intersection, so they are always watching out for each other.

yeah, law enforcement basically wants to make their paycheck while avoiding the hospital. Just make it retirement without dying.

most dont get pictures of anything more than the vehicle and the tag as it's passing under the red light, sneezing makes no difference

nope, that's an act of negligence, failure to secure load is how the citation is written

law enforcement was never about protecting anyone, cops dont
have to risk themselves to save a life and few ever do, it's
also not about preventing crimes, it's rare that they even
investigate one that isnt murder or some serious money involved
