I've concluded that bi-polar is actually hypochondria.
I may accept it as occasional depression but even depression tends to have a reason behind it.
Every human can be happy or sad. Now you have a condition for being happy or sad and guess what? By labeling it as a condition we re-affirm your belief that you are actually have a condition that needs treatment!
Treatment is always a pill or a therapist. What about just getting over it like every other fucker has too? Why go around telling everyone how ill you are cuz you have all these mental disorders?
This is insane man. Some of these things do exist but everyone is capable of treating them their selves. They are just thought loops like anxiety yet every time a new psychological condition is invented hoards or people suddenly claim to have it and go to get treatment.
Maybe we should just invent one to take the piss. Fuck it we could even sell the remedy, just trademark a placebo.

New psychological conditions aren't invented, they are identified.

um, bipolarism is a chemical imbalance.
-------------------- Man is timid and apologetic; he is no longer upright; he dares not say 'I think,' 'I am,' but quotes some saint or sage. He is ashamed before the blade of grass or the blowing rose.Man postpones or remembers; he does not live in the present, but with reverted eye laments the past, or, heedless of the riches that surround him, stands on tiptoe to foresee the future. He cannot be happy and strong until he too lives with nature in the present, above time

It's not just about feeling "happy or sad".
It's being so happy (i.e. manic) that you develop grandiose ideas. These can be things like investing your entire life savings in weird opportunities, and acting in ways that are seriosuly detrimental to your well-being.
You should visit a psychiatric ward. Not just someone seeing a shrink, but an actual ward, where you have people that are bat-shit crazy, thinking their god, talking to entities, drooling on themeselves, etc. etc. People who are seriously incapable of independent living. If you can't make it there, go to the bum on the corner (the guy talking to himself and humping utility poles) and say:
"get over it like everyone else does. You are capable of treating yourself". Let us know how it goes.

I'm bi-polar and I'm happy to say you don't know what you're talking about.
I find your post utterly misinformed and insulting.

Well I must be bi-polar and have OCD and anxiety and paranoia because at some point in my life i've experienced things that exactly fit the descriptions, as has EVERY other human.
The point is, once you label it as a conditionn people BELIEVE they permanently have the condition thus it becomes an excuse which is affirmed by "experts". Truth is everybody can conquer there mental issues on there own, without placebo pills.

I thought the same. Although I'm not bipolar, I still think he's a jackass for thinking something like that.

So I'm a jackass to because I know that labeling can perpetuate a state of mind?
How about you explain to me why I'm wrong instead of resorting to childish ad-hom.

I saw a long documentary one late night on PBS called The Medicated Child. Extremely interesting, and educational. It was completely unbiased and showed both sides and let you make your own conclusion. After watching it, I firmly believe, based on what I saw and have read, most cases are misdiagnosed. Not to say there isn't somehing to fix, but backed my very large profits, uneducated doctors, and people desperate for help will lead to this. The problem I find is that when someone goes to the doctor and learns the are "bipolar", they have a label now. Now psychologically they think they something wrong with them, and if you went a MD then you now have to take a script for the rest of your life.
A solid healthy wholefoods diet and a healthy lifestyle go a long way IME. And whose to say something isn't chemically imbalanced in your brain. But I doubt taking and unnatural synthetic substance that doesn't belong in the body in the first place is going to cure anything. I would bet, in the case, a more hollistic approach would provide better results.

I have to admit that I get depressed for long periods and that I have episodes of what could definitely be labelled manic behavior, not to mention a history of manic-deppresion diagnosi in my family, so I could definitely be labelled bipolar by a doctor if I went to one about it.
But I see that when life is going good and I keep an upbeat (or while manic, steady) approach to life, and heaven forbid do some exercise and eat right (I have the former atm), then I start to level out.
My honest opinion is that everyone has normal mood swings (ie chemical cycles) that get knocked out of wack by a society that has many obstacles and expectations, that our biology just wasn't designed to accomodate over long lengths of time; and that these knock the normal cycle off wack.
I'd like to see an anthropological study on bipolarism on hunter/gatherer societies or agrarian societies, and see how things pan out.
