I'm a 20 year old male, just received an associates degree, I plan on working full time for the next 2-3 years saving every penny then heading off somewhere to pursue a graduate program in wildlife biology.
I currently live near Dallas, Tx (big, big city for those of you who don't know). I hate the city, and I want out badly.
I'm a head over heels nature loving guy, if you wanna classify me I'm definitely a new-age hippie type (I do shower, I have a job, I have goals, I contribute to my community..) but I feel as if I don't fit in here in Texas at all.
what I'm looking for: -laid back, down to earth, nature loving hippie town that will accept a long-haired open minded vw bus drivin' fellow with open arms -relaxed laws and regulations -enviromentally-based university in close proximity -mountains, forests, rivers, oceans, trees trees trees, clean air, good earthly vibes -in the USA -art-based culture, great music, drum circles, dancing, open-mics, camping, lots of outdoor activities, coffee houses, organic food co-ops... -relatively low to moderate cost of living (money isn't a huge issue) -lots of good reefer
So where is this place of mine located?
Humboldt County and HSU have really caught my eye. I've done a lot of research... I keep finding A LOT of negativity about how everything is going downhill, especially Arcata's problem with the "parasites" (homeless) as people are calling them, and how the once lively plaza is now being taken over by tweaks and deadhead teens just wanting to causing problems... true or just bs? Anyone living in Humboldt wanna give me some useful, unbiased information?
I'm also looking at southern Oregon, specifically Ashland, Eugene and Corvallis, any info on these or surrounding places?
A friend of mine is going to Humboldt right now, and he hasn't mentioned any problems with homeless people or tweakers all over the place. That would be something he would mention, too.

For well you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.
Under closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
The evergreen State College in Olympia, WA is a good choice!
-------------------- I once spent six hours thinkin' about thinkin' and I thought, if I could think about something else i could think about it reall hard... but that was all I could think about~
I don't knw a place like that but if u find a good one be sure to let me kno Good luck

Mere anarchy is loosed upon th world;
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

Are full of passionate intensity." -W.B. Yeats

Yea I figure it's just a bunch of old locals not liking all the youngins taking over their town ranting bullshit here and there..
I don't have a problem with homeless, but one person will say something that makes humboldt sound perfect, and then another person will make me not even want to come anymore... I don't know what to believe.
also, add job opportunities to that list. I'll only need part-time. I say that because I've read a lot about Humboldt being horrible for finding work.
Fairbanks, Alaska!!!! Or any of the rural areas around there or Anchorage, 98% of the people there accepts anybody and everybody, great opportunities all around (Universities, jobs, fun, friends, everything!) And some of the best smoke too!!! Of course, I have to admit that I am biased about Alaska because my heart is there.

Uggh.. I spent a year there one week. The rest of AK is bomber though.. Fairbanks was just too depressing and isolated for me. Nice campus, though.
Quote: Gainesville Fl.
I did 5 years of hard time in G-ville, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone! Besides, like gluke said, Gainesville is NOT the town he is describing. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a place that is more unlike what he's looking for.

In my experience, true. When I rolled through, it seemed as though the plaza, and town in general, had been overwhelmed by homelessness, drugs, and crime. It didn't help my experience when at 3am someone came pounding on the door at our motel (the nicest one we could afford) looking for crack, and yelling for us to open up. Whatever. All in all, I'd be wary of the colleges that have the hippie tag attached directly to them.. Maybe it's just me, but places like that seem to draw tons of people with no interest in education, and who are only looking to get fucked up on the eazz.
However, I've never been on campus @ Evergreen in Oly, but that's a great town, and a lot bigger than Arcata/Eureka.. state capitol after all. I rolled through there a few times and really enjoyed it. It rains a lot. Be ready.
I'd also recommend Missoula, MT. UM is a good school and notorious in Montana for being hippie-central. As far as outdoors activities are concerned, you'll have a tough time finding a large school so near to true wilderness. It can get way cold in the winter, but there are supposed to be four seasons.. not just hot, and way hot. Think about it. Appalachian State in Boone NC, might be worth a gander, as well. Not-so-big city surrounded by beautiful mountains within spitting distance of the Smokies and the Blue Ridge. Outside of those, I'd look into UNH, in Durham, New Hampshire, and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
