 Are drunk drivers who get in accidents really just drunk, shitty drivers?

I originally posted this in Shroomerites Anonymous, but figured it might get more responses in the Pub, and my curiosity was piqued by another post here.
So I'm not one to hedge the truth--I've driven drunk quite a few times. I always follow the speed limit, stop at red lights and stop signs, and make sure to obey every damn traffic rule including checking the crosswalks for pedestrians. The alcohol is not a problem for safety.
So what is up with all these drunk drivers going 90 down a road, blowing red light, and smashing into people? Are they just naturally terrible drivers? Or do they just not care about any potential destruction that might occur?
Personally, I think the absolute stigma against any amount of consumption of alcohol in combination with driving is a type of conspiracy that's been hyped up by social hysteria and MADD. Drunk driving can be no more harmful than driving after being sleep-deprived and falling asleep at the wheel (which happens MORE often than drunk driving), but it's when you combine naturally shitty drivers with the drink that you get one rotten apple spoiling the entire barrel.

LOL. I totaled my 98 Mustang GT last summer, the second one(the first one I was sober and it was an 01). I had 1.25 camo blacks, fell asleep. Woke up, broke up with my girlfriend, got in my car to drop off her shit, and smashed into 2 cars and totaled all three. I was going 40 ish in a neighborhood. A giant ass SUV was honkin down the middle of the fucking road and had to swerve(SP) to miss him. Inevitably forcing me kill everyone. Now, it wasn't strictly my intoxication that caused me to wreck. The fact that I had literally woken up 5 minutes before that, and and was hella angry, aided in it, alot.
Yeah, I went to jail for a month and a half since I am on probation. But, since then, my life has been better. I got on antidepressants which stabilized my mood, and now I am off and doing pretty well. I have had a couple speeding tickets, but, I have always owned sports cars. I pretty much have a clean DMV record. So, not everyone who drives drunk and kills the world is a shitty driver. Just most of them.

I have noticed that my friends who have been in accidents while driving drunk are normally pretty shitty drivers.

Well, that sucks for them. I have never been in an accident caused by me, just by other dumb mother fuckers who can't signal or drive. USE YOUR FUCKING SIGNAL! I have driven stoned, drunk, half asleep, and on mushrooms, and have never caused an accident, except last summer. And the only cars I have had accidents in are my Mustangs. Rear wheel drive cars are a bitch, especially when they are so light in the ass. They are fun as hell, and can make some gnarly stripes down the road, if you know what I mean. I have left clouds of smoke on take off. Aaahhh, the gold old days.

I'd say the same, but dose plays a big role. Alcohol is still harder to pull then most others, esp when you're really fucking drunk and your coordination is shot.

i'll always be aware of my speed and lane and lights and all that shit... most of the time the difficulty is getting my limbs to move in a way to keep me in the right place, not my focus

Better safe than sorry, clinical studies prove that people are more prone to do a worse job at driving drunk than when sober. To each their own as long they don't total my car.
