Anyone played this yet? Is it kinda like Empire Earth or Age of Empires but in space? I've been reading about it online but can't seem to figure out exactly what its like... its got good reviews though. Is there a random map generator?

i played this game for the first time on adderall. started a match at midnight and was ojust making it out of my first galaxy when my alarm went off (6am). thought it had only been an hour haha. The game is fun, but the matches are insanely long and the learning curve is steep.
but yeah, there is a map generator and lots of mods with new single player content.

I played the hell out of it during finals week (for some reason), now I am bored from it.
It is an empire builder in space. Its real time, not turn based ... but it is slow paced for more strategy and less mouse skills. Its only two dimensional, which is fail for a space game.
Im a big civilization player, so thats where I am coming from. Sins of a solar empire was real fun at first, but then waned very quickly. In the end, I say its a marginal game.

He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

I'm big into civ games too... I bought Bioshock the other day but its just not holding my interest. I never got EE3 because I heard it sucked nuts, but I've been waiting for a good civ builder game to come out. You think Sins is worth it if I've got some extra dough and time on my hands?

I read about this, but I just got Civ4, so I'm calling that my only game for the next few months. Maybe SoaSE can tear me away from it then.

Same here...played it a lot at first, now I don't play it at all!
An OK game...nothing great though.
civ4 is way better

Turn based = you have to be smart, not on loads of caffeine + $200 mouse

Civilization is a hard core game. I remember playing for 18 hours straight in my youth, eating next to the computer.
I think Im pretty good at Civ IV, I can usually beat it on prince. But I dont play online, because the games are too long. Im sure I would get annihilated online. My strategy usually turns out the same wether I like it or not, praetorian rush using Rome, and then raze the enemies with the highest technology till they all capitulate.
I can honestly say I have excessively played every civilization and offshoot.
Civ1 Civ II and its expansion (fanatics!) Alpha centauri and its expansion (great game, worth money now as a collectors item) Civilization: Call to power I & II (not by sid meier but, kind of fun) Civ III and now Civ IV and its expansions.
Anyway, you want an RTS... well I dont think their are any great ones right now. The last good one I played was company of heroes, and before that warcraft III.

Cons of SoaSe:
each "planet" is linked by a hyperspace lane but you can usually hit other lanes from the exit point of one, this means entire forces can just go through your defensive lines no problem, maybe lose a few ships thats it. Also the "gravity well" area of each planet where you can move around is 2d and extrememly small. I cant find a whole lot of movement tactic situations but there are some. Overall this game fails just by comparing fun vs time wasted. A small map takes like 2hrs for a 2v2 and around 5 for a 3way. So at first i rated it a 7/10 now after playing it a lot i think id give it a 5/10.
