FAFSA

I've been waiting a year to do this, just kept putting it off, again and again, and now I finally have done it, and it was EASY.
Duh, what was I waiting for? The time is NOW!
Anyway...I'm just curious about how long it takes to get an answer and...
...what kind of answer? I'm sure it's different for everyone, but what kind of results do people usually get for the FAFSA? I'm just curious about the reponse I'm going to get. I'm sure I could just wait a few days and find out...
..but I thought I'd send my inquiry to the Shroomery, since I might as well.

Did you file your FAFSA online? If so, I hope you kept your PIN. And your response will be only a few days. If you filed it by mail, you will get an acceptance letter within a couple of weeks, which your SAR (student aid report) should follow a couple days later. The lower your SAR nymber is the more $$$ you will get in a pell grant.

Not only pell grants but work study money as well. And yeah, takes a few days and then you'll get your EFC. Hopefully you claimed yourself independent...
Plus, here in Colorado we have the Colorado College Responsbility Grants and we also have a thing called College Oppurtunity Fund, which pays for about 1/3 the price of tuition each semester if you are a registered tax-payer.

Careful. Make sure you talk to STUDENTS of the school during your visit. I made that mistake at ITT Tech, even when I RE-enrolled. I'm really discouraged from furthering my education, both because of the debt it put me in and the incompetency of the teachers there. Try to find ones with an American accent too. You definitely don't want a calc teacher that butchers English and talks to a chalkboard. So many things I wish I did differently. Oh well, good luck!

I did my FAFSA a couple of months ago. It only took a week for me to get my confirmation but took about a month to actually find out how much aid I was receiving. Im getting 5,981$ in assistance from Grants and 2,000$ for doing a work/study program.
That leaves me around 8-9k to finance for my freshman year. Hopefully getting more scholarships and grants next year.
Congrats on getting your FAFSA done, I know how it is, I took 2 years to finally get myself back into school. Good luck in the Fall or whenever you decide to go back to class.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I'm going to be attending a community college, but I will need to live off campus due to my big fluffy dog. Would like to avoid having a roommate if possible just because I've never lived alone before. I'll probably continue to work part time, depending on how the loan situation looks.
I'm SO pumped about getting back into school. I graduated from high school in 2001, and attended college in 2002 for only a semester before I just dropped out, due to severe mental anxiety issues during that time. I went back again in 2004, but the same situation repeated itself. Just phased out, even though I was making straight A's.
This time, I KNOW I'm ready. I've had four solid years of growth and life experience since my last college venture, and feel completely focused and prepared. I've changed everything about my lifestyle since that time and feel fucking fantastic! I'm determined to kick ass in college; I can't wait to spend hours studying/reading material, going to class everyday, taking tests, writing papers. I want the full-fledged college experience, finally, because now I feel like it's time.
Eventually after spending some time at my two-year college and RAWKING It, I'm going to transfer to a university.

Thats the attitude thats exactly how I am approaching this opportunity. I think once you have worked and experienced life you are ready to do whatever it takes to earn a better living and that means becoming educated.

Pace yourself. Focus on the big picture. Straight A's are great, but overworking yourself to get those A's will burn students out pretty quick, and 4 years (even 2 years) can be a long time...

I just got my fafsa back and they want me to fill in about a dozen new forms, the bastards. But at least my EFC is 0, whoohoo.

How can your EFC be 0? Unless you didnt report an income last year...
And Moth, how do you tell if youre overworking yourself in college? Even the classes you went back to school to take, meaning the ones you were most looking forward to, you dread going to and dread doing the assigned work.
Been there it sucks. If you are going to go back full-time, I would recommend taking the least amount of credits considered as full-time, most likely 12 credits, or 4 classes.

The line for the expected family contribution is something like 23,000 dollars, or at least it was a couple years ago.
(That's income reported on your taxes by the way )
