this is in the 'alice in wonderland' attraction at disneyland.

i want this chesire cat lamp in my room, so im going to make him.
i'm thinking, to sculpt him out of foam as a mold for a fiberglass body? i've never worked w/ fiberglass, but i've read about it, & how messy & expensive it is.
what kind of paint would i use? what should i do about his eyes & mouth? the only things that should be illuminating.. basically i want this to look as pro as possible.
any ideas? any other ideas besides fiberglass?
hellp mee! =D

they sell plastic beads in craft stores that can be formed and melted to the shape of what ever you use for a mold, if you want the whole head you'll need a 2 part mold, to get an example of this you can see them in the kids department of most stores selling as lamps or night lights
as for the fiberglass, it can be pretty messy and difficult to work with, but shouldnt be too difficult with a little practice, the hardest part is rolling out out to get all the bubbles out
for more detailed instruction on working with a variety of materials go to http://instructables.com

look for something that has already been manufactured. it will be cheaper. Fiberglass can become expensive. I guess for a lamp you would only need one kit, and a kit will run you about $18. You can find fiberglass kits that come with the resin, fabric (not matte), and hardener at Autozone or a department hardware store. but youll also need to buy paint brushes and maybe a small mini roller to roll out the air bubbles, rubber gloves, a mask (optional), and some good scissors or tin snips.
Spend a SHIT load of time on the mold. the mold is EVERYTHING. and youll have to worry about being able to separate the cast from the mold once its dry. There are several agents you could use for this, but the only real 'requirement' is that your mold is sealed.
Once you have your fiberglass part (two layers thick would prob be enough), i find that a dremel tool is very useful for cleaning it up and cutting. Youll need to buy a bunch of blades for it tho.
THEN in order to make it smooth enough to paint youll need to bondo some areas, and bondo is a BITCH to work with. Itll take you forever and youll make a huge mess. Bondo, sand, bondo, sand, bondo, sand, bondo, sand, etc. Bondo kits run about $12 if i remember correctly.
Seriously, after its all done this little 'project' may take several weeks and like $60-80 before its done. More if its your first time working with the stuff and you need practice and make mistakes.
