His name was Bones. He was such a great cat with more personality than any cat I've ever had or met and it was probably due to the ridiculous amount of attention my girlfriend has given him since he was born.
He was 6 and half years old today and in the past 2 weeks had been getting very sick. 5 days ago he stopped drinking and eating all together and was literally howling quite frequently. Also being anti-social from the other cats, spending all his time under the bed, bad breath, runny eyes, SO weak and malnurished looking...so we made an appointment(couldn't get us until today) and after a $130 dollar blood test the vet told us that he hardly had any kidneys left.
I suspected a kidney failure of some sort. She said it was weird though because his kidneys were basically being eaten away, which is what they see when a cat drinks anti-freeze(my previous cat died of this). But Bones was a stricly indoor cat with no access to anything harmful like this, so I just don't get it.
This was taken 1 and half hours ago, 20 minutes before he was put down. And to top it all off, the entire bill came to $288. That's for bringing him in for them to tell us we should get a blood test to know for sure, the money for the blood test, a 2 dollar charge for having to call us and give us the bad news and the put down fee...which all happened today in a span of maybe an hour. They sure stick it to you.

Yeah i was gonna say, it does very much sound like he mightve been fed one of the recent contaminated cans of food.
Check the food youre feeding them, see the printed code and call up the manufacturer to see if it was on the recall list.
 It looked like a nice kitty.

Cute cat, I'm sorry to hear this.
I agree that it sounds suspiciously like that poisoning....I'd look into that if I were you.

Yeah, that was the first thing that came to my mind.
I looked it up and the poisoned food was only wet food and they don't get wet food. Plus, the brand we were feeding him is completely different.

Losing an animal is terrible, you really do get attached to them and dont realise how awesome a good pet is until something bad happens such as this.

my cat Puma went the same way. he was a stricly indoor cat, and was about 8 & he was always a big eater. So when i came home and his food wasnt touched I knew he was sick, but he seemed ok, just a little listless. Withinin one week, and a lot of howling and hiding in the closet, he lost the use of his legs. When i examined him he had these weird lumps behind his stomach area.
I called a vet who made home visits (hey I had $$ back then), and after a blood test and a physical exam, I was told he was in complete renal failure. his kidneys were the size of baseballs, and his options were a 2K surgury + years of dialysis and shots or euthanisa. I told the Doc to take him for Euthanisa. i held him for a few mintues. he looked distant, he was dying. I kissed him good bye and put him in the docs cat carrier.
I got a certificate in the mail a week later from the crematorium.
RIP Bones.
RIP Puma.
Your girl is gonna be out of it for a while. My condolences.

Few weeks back, I had our 2 cats put dowm.
Same sort of symptoms.
F**KING bastards @ MENU pet foods.
Should PAY.
I'm signing on the class action suit.
It's not about recovering bucks.
It's about payback.

seems to be alot of bs going on with food, both human and pet.
if it was me i would feet my pet what their sopposed to eat.
if you got a cat...feed him mice, squirrle, chipmunk, and alittle bit of snake....oh and they like grasshoppers and crickets too.
stay away from hamburger and hotdogs thow i heard that shits bad for you and your pets.
and as far as these assholes poisening pet food....i would make them eat it...if its not good enough for a human its not good enough for any of my pets. althow apparently human standards are down.

My understanding from everything I've read was that it was only wet food from all those brands and not the dry varieties.
Her other 2 cats are fine and the one eats night and day, so I'm positive it wasn't the food.
What's that about getting my water tested, to whoever said that? Something in my water could do that? I've been drinking lots of it and when I read that I had a glass of water in front of me...now i"m all wigged out!

Sorry for your loss as well.
I only knew Bones for almost 2 years myself, but it still sucked.
I do remember how I felt though when I had to put down my cat, a VERY close friend, at age 17...all because someone deliberately poisoned him with anti-freeze, because they were mad at him going in their garden. Fuckers. There were TONS of outdoor cats roaming that trailer court and it came with the territory. Put up some chicken wire in your garden if you have to, or mouse traps....or you can try and kill them all off with anti-freeze 
We took Bones to the very same vet that I had to bring my old cat, so it sort of brought back a lot of old "feelings" from the first time.

Addendum - My baby cat passed in '98 - way before the MenuFoods debacle - I think this 'affliction" hits cats, maybe some sort of intrincsic disease to their species - i dont know if cats are supposed to live "that long" what is the average life span of a wild cat, I dontk now- but a house cat can live till 20 - maybe when they get old, (7+) they get sick. My cat now (pooty) is 7, and I am going to take him to the vet after this thread just for a check up.
I still think the pet food scandal is monstrous.

i cried a little as i read/replied to this the first time. i didnt know after so many years (it happened in 98) i would still feel it. i know its silly to think , but i do hope there is a kitty heaven.
