Communication Breakdown
    #5742773 - 06/12/06 05:49 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

In my opinion, graemlins are the lowest form of communication.

Telephones: You loose all body movements and facial expressions
Internet: You lose any tone or volume to your voice
Graemlins: You actually alter your emotion to match one of a small selection. You could argue that words are the same way, but you have many more choices

Anyone care to go further?

Look at that page of fucking graemlins! If you can't find a valid graemlin for your mood, then make your own. I feel there's more than enough for adequate communication. :crankey: <---------See?

Text: you only have words that may have several meanings or be ambiguous. I'll keep my graemlins...

Although, I generally agree with your thesis, I would beg to differ slightly. Although their selection is smaller than the range provided by the plasticity of facial expression, emoticons are better than nothing.

If you strip the emoticons away, then you often end up with more miscommunication, because elements such as sarcasm can be lost. And this often leads to flaming, where very little actual communication takes place...

MSN/chat rooms -

Whenever your reading the text your always interperting the words yourself. So you could talk to someone for a year and still never really have an idea about what their really like.

Basically you have invented a person using the words on the screen.
Its abit like talking to yourself.

Interesting observation...

Sort of like when the movie comes out of your favorite book, and you say to yourself, "but he doesn't sound like that."

Some of us went down to see a dead baby whale that was caught up in the pilings below Safeway. It was kind of sad, but I was amazed how large it was. It was just floating there about 10 feet from me. It was about 20 feet long and it's tongue was all swollen up like a giant pillow.

We get those sometimes. They will be migrating north with their mothers and they'll get separated and swim up the Columbia river and get trapped...

Edit: Oh, "beaked" whale! I thought you said "beached" whale. Never mind...

Hehehe... Beaked Whale!

Give me your address, and I will explain it with facial expressions and everything. I will even bring my panpipes!

Feel free to poke as many holes in this as you want, I posted it raw, immediately as I though of it.
