Who here has stepped into the real world?

well, I left college, and moved to California with my fiance. I lived on the east coast, and now I'm here where I know no one except my fiance. I got a great job, that I enjoy, however I feel homesick. I've only been here about a week. Working 40 hours a week sucks. This is the first job I've had in 5 years, except for a one month stint at a small job that was 14 hours a week. Sigh. I used to think how great it would be to be out of school and working, but now I wish I was back.

I've been independent since I was 19 or so. I work and everything I do or own is through my own labor.
no work in 5 years? I am often surprised how easy some people have it. I'd rather earn my life then have it given to me, though.

Nah, I like the job a lot. I just miss my home. I grew up and lived in Pennsvlvania for 22 years, and I had to leave sooner than I hoped.

I'm starting to wonder when I'll ever make it out of my parents' house. I've been unemployed for the past 5 months, and most of the jobs I'm looking at right now don't pay much more than minimum wage. I'm beginning to wonder if my bachelor's degree is worth the paper it's printed on.

Nah, I think I'll be alright. My fiance is done law school in one year, and at her old school had a 4.0, and I assume will do the same here, and between the two of us, should be making about 350k a year in about a year. I'm making a lot now, which I thought would make me happy, however nothing can make up for not having your friends and family close by.

liberal arts bachelors degrees are generally worthless unless you go to graduate school or lucky (also known as knowing people)
learn a trade and become your own person (i.e. off mama's teet).

Have you tried going to a temp agency? If you have a college degree in anyhing besides communications or psychology, you should be able to land a job that pays at least 30k a year. A temp agency can often hook you up with a job where they will then consider hiring your permanently. A friend of mine with an english degree just landed a 40k a year job by doing this.

I already did learn a trade. I spent $150 out of my own pocket to go to bartending school, only to find out there's no bartending jobs in my area for someone with no experience.

I have lived in New York city for twenty two years of my life. On June 8 I will turn 23. Twenty three years in the same city. It is so difficult for me to leave and yet I know, in my heartof hearts, that I must. THe soul will grow under the breath of travel and new experiences and I must give it room to breathe. But I don't know where to guide it to, or where to follow it to.

get a waiter job at a restaurant with a bar. work the tables for a few all the while let your manager know of your bar skills & license. that's how you get experience. most people do this.

Shit man I know how you feel. I moved from a somewhat small town out to California about two weeks ago now. Its a completely different world out here. Things people do out here are in no way the same as back home. Ive seen the worst drivers out here and the people arent much better. Alot of the people I have ran into have been rude as hell to me.

Damn. I used to live in Texas/Louisiana when I was a kid before my parents took me to California when I was 10 or 11.
Though I miss the "southern hospitality"...I love San Diego. The nicest people and the weather is just something to awe at every single morning I wake up to have a cigarette on my porch. Well, not porch...patio.
The food out here makes it worth it whenever I start to question wheather or not I'll ever leave this place. I'd love to just move in and buy a house in Louisiana. I'd be right next to my grandparents, aunt and uncle. Here's a little glimpse of what their neighborhood is like.
I try to take vacations back there every couple of years. It's really refreshing. The AC is always on high, people are up at 4am making breakfast and coffee...grits are a must. Walmart is the coolest spot in town unless you want to drive 30 minutes to the nearest city.
