It would usually be something you would be accused of a crime for doing, yes.
Mutilating or desecrating a corpse would be illegal unless it was in the wishes of the person who previously owned the body, (IE the dead bloke)

talking to my new boss is like having sex with a corpse
but i would think it would depend if you killed them in order to teh the appendage. cause i would imagine you would only be charged for murder... not cutting the appendage.

it's illigal to move a body from a crime scene, what if you worked in the morgue, and had access to it, but werent the guy who normaly chops people up... would that be illigal?

abusing a corpse is a felony.
if you need some proof, google "Tri-State crematory"
In a nutshell, it's a case that happened a few years ago in which a crematory operator dumped bodies instead of cremating them.
