Good starting point for wine

Well I'm turning 21 tomorrow, and a friend and I have wanted to start drinking wine for quite some time but I know nothing about them.
The red wine I've had before I didn't enjoy, so I'm looking to start with white. What would yall recommend I try? Thanks

Many of our local californian white wines are fairly decent, and affordable.
If you go to a winery, however, you can ask questions to people who know wine the way newton knew physics. And they will likely be very helpful in assisting you to select a wine.
Myself I have to say I prefer a white wine over red wine, however being underage I lack the ability to purchase wine, which would be a prerequisite to finding a good brand that suits my own tastes.

I think wine is an aquired taste. Most people don't really appreciate it at first, at least not to its fullest potential. I didn't start drinking wine on a regular basis until I was almost 30. A good place to start is with some sweeter wines (white zinfandels are nice). Many people do not like the drier, heavier wines at first. I didn't, but now I prefer them.

nyet! horrible.
If you're going to suggest something inexpensive that's found in a supermarket, at least suggest something along the lines of Arbor Mist or the like.
A wine in a box isn't going to make you vomit, but you get what you pay for in that price range. That stuff is mediocre.

personally the only wine i ever drink is to get extremely drunk extremely fast, ala' the bum wines. thunderbird, wild irish rose, and night train. cheap and get 'er done, really fast. the only bum wine i can think of that i would never ever reccomend anyone drink is mad dogg, but apparantly you don't want to get wasted.
i drank some higher end white zinfandel at a wedding when i was a bit younger, and it went down almost like water. snuck that shit out of a fountain that was dubbed "grown people drink dispenser".
i recently drank some Sutter Home white zinfandel trying to get drunk(about 3 weeks ago) and didn't really succeed in getting plastered but it tasted pretty good. it's cheap[er] too, around 7$ for 750ml.
sherry tastes okay too, but i admit, i really don't know what defines a "dry" wine or a "red/dark/white/whatever" wine either. i guess i'm a true bum when i go wine shopping: i want to get drunk. biggest alcohol per volume for the cheapest price

zinfendel is good, and so is shiraz. Okanagan wine rocks (bc represent!)
about $12 dollars canadian lands me a nice bottle of a wine, which gets me well drunk with no hangover. I drank wine twice this weekend, both were chosen by other people, both cost $12 dollars and both were excellent.

you are in the U.S? go to a REPUTABLE wine place, ask the guy for a californian chardonay, throw 30$ on the bottle. If the guy dont want to sell the product he<s making the more profit on... he will give you good advice.
Oh, if you are the type who likes really sugary/fruity stuff, go german. I'll say.. Riesling (the grape), Nahe (region), Spatlese(sugar/harvest thing) 2001 is a good year.. from the Nahe region the Doonhorf house seems to be hip these days.
Have fun! And by the way, QUALITY red wine can be very good when aged properly.
Dont go french/italian when starting. European wine of decente quality are exepensive and require more tasting experience.

also Montanore makes a very nice pinot noir. (red wine)
Robert mondavi has a very good Cabernet Sauvignon (red wine)

You can get dank wine that comes in a box now. Also you can now get dank wine with a screw top.
Personally I like cabernets and shiraz the best. You'll have to try a bunch of kinds. Go to a winery or get a few bottles of a certain type, and pour out a small amount in glasses, and sip in between the different brands, and you'll notice distinct differences. For instance, if you try a cabernet of one brand today, and another one tommorow, they are both basically for the most part going to taste like cabernet, but if you compare the two brands against eachother at the same time, you'll be blown away at the difference.
Yum!

I wasn't expecting somebody to use the adjective "dank" in a wine thread.
So they now make box wines that are uncomfortably moist?
"Dank (dangk) adj. -Disagreeably damp or humid"
"dank" is one of the more annoying drug slangs out there, mostly because it's hard to tell what the hell someone is talking about with it, and because it's also a common english word with a specific meaning which is confusing to toss around.
