Put simply, are you happy in life?
    #4273552 - 06/08/05 08:37 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Honestly, I don't know how to answer my own question. There is an inner-happiness I have about existance, life, and all that corny, but meaningful stuff.

My current position in life is a weird one; I have a family member who is very mentally ill who I used to live with, moved out on my own for the previous reason, just finished my freshmen year at college after leaving for a few years, and I'm looking to record an album (music is my biggest passion).

Things have never been better in many ways, but also full of challenges that aren't under my control. Fortunately, I've managed to take some of the control, but it is certainly far from ideal.

Then I look at the way the world is, and it amazes me how crazy things are. That's kind of a "no duh" statement.

I will say that I am in constant awe of everything. Sometimes really simple things like fractals, sensery information, etc.. Or modern devices which I really don't understand how they work (do you really, truly understand how the computer you're typing on works from the ground up? I understand a lot about computers, but fuck if I could build one not using pre-manifactured parts). Then there is what I like to call "social acceptable insanity" - all the insane things "normal" people do which really don't make any logical sense. Sometimes I feel as if life is a parody of itself.

As you can see, I had trouble answering my own question. How about you?

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

i am very happy with my life. i have a wife, good animals, a nice home, food on the table, etc. but, i am not satisfied. there is so much i want to do and learn. hopefully, i wont feel satidifed with my life until i'm laying on my deathbed surrounded by my family and the life i have made for them and myself.

a bit hokey, but its exactly how i feel.

right on! its nice to hear someone have something positive to say about marriage.

when i tell my "friends" I'm getting married, they say "what did you do wrong?" I just laugh at them and say they are just jealous because they aren't wanted, and will die lonley

I am happy but not satisfied. I will be starting college in fall and it will almost be free because of scholarships. Basically my bachelor's is taken care of and all I have to do is keep my GPA up. My family is doing great too and I've been bonding with them, getting high and going to family reunions, it's been great. The only thing I'm missing is my significant other but that could be a good thing, less drama.

What is the greatest experience you can have? It is the hour of the great contempt. The hour when your happiness, too, arouses your disgust, and even your reason and your virtue.
The hour when you say, "What matters my happiness? It is poverty and filth and wretched contentment. But my happiness ought to justify existence itself."
-Friedrich Nietszche

That really explains my current situation. I don't know whether I'd be considered happy to someone else, nor do I care. Happiness hasn't been my priority in life for years.

It is for me.

Same here! There's always room for improvement, but I'm in a pretty nice place in life too....

I'd rather be the most miserable person in the world and not content, then the happiest and content.

being content is a sad state for human existence.

There's a reason why many great artists aren't the happiest and most content of people. Happiness is irrelevant when talking about any creation that matters, whether it be music, art, inventions or philosophy.

There's much more important matters than happiness, in my opinion.

How about being content with you ability to achieve and grow? I don't want to be in my situation for ever, but I am content with my "upward mobility"

I agree with the gist of your statement though.

No. I've been a nihilist since I was thirteen. Before I even knew what the hell a nihilist was.

Et tu Brute?

Nihilism does not necessarily mean you're unhappy; when everything loses its meaning, you can create any happiness you want.

But I'm in the same boat as you. I've been an atheist since I was 10 or 11, and a Nihilist since I was 13 or so. Must simply be the way some people are wired.
