An abandoned vehicle led officials to the residence of Evan Leon Lee and his alleged crop of mushrooms and marijuana last week.
On Feb. 16, Dawson County officials pursued a vehicle through the roads of the county. They never caught the suspect, but they found the car abandoned and it reportedly contained paperwork that led the authorities to Lee's residence on Laurel Circle.
There officials looked through the window of the home to see two marijuana plants under grow lights, said Capt. Jason Stover of the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office
A couple of dried up marijuana leaves were also found in a camping chair on the front porch, said an Appalachian Drug Task Force member.
Lee's mother reportedly gave the deputies permission to search her home.
There they found the marijuana plants, additional marijuana and various cultivating tools, said Stover.
They also located two plastic bins of what officials say are psilocybin mushrooms.
Often referred to as “shrooms” or “Magic Mushrooms,” the fungi can be eaten or brewed into tea for a hallucinogenic high.
Sheriff Mark McClure said such mushrooms are extremely difficult to cultivate and, as a result, extremely rare in the region.
“It's got to be the right conditions, the right temperature, the right humidity and the right amount of light for it to produce,” he said.
The crop at Lee's residence appeared to be sprouting from beneath specifically-tailored fertilizer molds that officials described as simulated cow patties.
“It appears to mimic the process of a cow patty,” said McClure.
As a result, the 24-year-old Lee was arrested and charged with possession of more than an ounce of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, manufacturing marijuana and manufacturing of psilocybin mushrooms.
McClure added that it's not often that he sees such mushrooms in Lumpkin County, but he encountered them frequently during his days of investigating drug activity at concerts in Athens.
“I used to work the Widespread Panic tour and you'd always see these mushrooms,” he said.
