Man pulls out bag of drugs during court, gets arrested

NEWARK -- A Dublin man expressed regret Wednesday in Licking County Municipal Court for not hiding his drugs in a more secretive, but also likely uncomfortable, location.
Daniel Vanwalsen, 20, had been found guilty of complicity, a first-degree misdemeanor, minutes earlier by Judge Michael Higgins for his role in a theft at a Heath gas station in January.
After voicing his displeasure with the ruling, Higgins said Vanwalsen was asked by bailiff Phil Rhodes if he had any contraband in his possession.
Vanwalsen promptly bent over and produced a bag of heroin from his shoe and proclaimed he was an addict.
He was arrested by Newark police on felony drug abuse charges.
Before his arrest, Vanwalsen told onlookers in the court lobby that he should have stashed his heroin in his rectum, Higgins said.
