Magic mushroom blitz July 7, 2005 - yourguide.com.au
Local police charged 15 people with possessing magic mushrooms last week.
A further two will be charged with trespass and three juvenile cautions were issued for possessing a smoking implement.
In the past week 1.857 kilograms of magic mushroom were seized bringing this year's total to 2.725kg.
Police from Donnybrook, Bridgetown, Manjimup and Nannup joined forced to target people attempting to pick magic mushrooms.
Operation 'Shroom is a concerted effort to discourage people from picking the fungus which grows near Balingup at this time of year. It will run until the end of this week.
Constable Stuart Gerryn said the mushroom season started slowly but had picked up in recent days.
He said 17 people were caught within a three day period last week.
Two of those were juveniles and most will be charged with possession of a prohibited substance.
Six people were charged on both Tuesday and Thursday while five people were charged on Thursday.
Constable Gerryn said many of the people caught were not locals.
"Obviously it is university holidays at the moment and people are coming down from Perth," he said.
Constable Gerryn said offenders were easy to spot and often had wet jeans up to their knees, bare feet and other signs of walking around in the bush.
While most people charged with possession received a fine, Constable Gerryn said a prison sentence was a possibility depending on previous offences.
"It is a criminal charge and you will receive a criminal record which could count against you in later life," he said.
