Feds break up N.C. cocaine ring

More than a dozen suspects were arrested and charged in connection with a drug ring that authorities said trafficked at least $100 million of cocaine into North Carolina in recent years.
The charges, which stem from a 14-month investigation, allege that the ring operated in Alamance, Durham and Guilford counties, the U.S. Justice Department said at a news conference Tuesday.
Three people also face counts of conspiracy to launder the drug proceeds. And one of those three - Gerardo Alvarado Alvarado, 34, of Elon - was also indicted on charges of structuring certain financial transactions for the purpose of evading federal currency transaction reporting requirements.
"It's a significant organization that's been disrupted by this indictment," said Lynne Klauer, an assistant U.S. attorney and press officer for the Middle District of North Carolina.
Authorities believe the drug ring brought at least 5,500 kilograms of cocaine into the region, she said. The indictment also alleges the drug ring conspired to distribute an unspecified amount of marijuana.
Most of the suspects, who ranged in age from 21 to 49, lived in Alamance County.
