Cannabis use linked to high suicide rates [AUSTRALIA]
    #8420075 - 05/19/08 01:39 PM (6 months, 11 days ago)

A NEW report has linked the use of cannabis to high levels of suicide and depression in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.

The report, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, shows cannabis use among some Aboriginal communities was at least double that of the general population.

"In Arnhem Land communities, a high prevalence of cannabis use has persisted since 2001, with 61 per cent of males and 58 per cent of females aged 13-36 years reporting using cannabis at least weekly in 2005-6,'' the report said.

This compares with the general population where only 24 per cent of males and 21 per cent of females aged 14 or older used cannabis at least weekly.

The report suggests the high prevalence of cannabis use is having a major impact on the mental health outcomes for Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal people are between four and five times more likely than other Australians to be hospitalised for mental or behavioural disorders as a result of psychoactive substance misuse, the report said.

It also points out that suicide rates among Aboriginal people aged up to 24 years are five times higher for females and three times higher for males compared to non-Aboriginal Australians.

The release of the report has prompted calls for the federal government to intervene immediately.

Drug Free Australia spokesman Stuart Reece says a cohesive and coordinated response is needed in the Northern Territory to address what has been a health and social issue for too long.

"The conclusions drawn are unequivocal, stating that given its high prevalence in indigenous populations, the development of clinical and prevention strategies for cannabis use are warranted,'' Dr Reece said.

Hmmm.... why is there never any data in these articles. I could write one of these myself, but it is not scientific without data and a fully articulated strategy for duplication. I think many journalists went into the field due to inherent laziness.

Hmmm...cannabis or the fact that they were nearly systematically wiped out by the whites and they now live in poverty in a land that used to be theirs?

Exactly, you could say that blacks are more likely to develop sickle cell anemia than whites because of any number of factors, but the pure fact is THEY DON'T KNOW WHY. Race is a huge factor, as much as everyone doesn't want to say it.

These aboriginals are doing a lot more then smoking some weed. I remember visiting one of these community housing areas. There wasn't an hour that passed that I would see young kids or even very old men walking around with a bottle and some petrol in it, sniffing it as if its as normal as breathing. I've read reports showing how high the rate of rape is. I've read reports of how low the income of food is, and the quality of water. I am 100% sure weed doesn't cause these suicides. There's a whole lot of other shit thats going on that needs to be addressed first. For fucks sake, some people need to step off the "Cannabis is the problem" idea!

Widely used antidepressants double the risk of suicidal behavior in young adults, from around three cases per thousand to seven cases per thousand
