A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for his role in a drug ring that distributed more than a ton of marijuana in the Kansas City metro area.
Victor Hugo Ramos was sentenced Monday to 188 months in prison in connection to the drug ring, which distributed more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana.
Ramos pleaded guilty in June 2007 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana.
In his plea, he admitted he was a member of a major Mexican drug trafficking organization, with the Kansas City cell being headed by his brother, Gaspar Ramos, who sometimes employed him to safeguard and distribute cash drug proceeds.
Gaspar Ramos was arrested on Nov. 9, 2006, as a result of a two-year wiretap investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On the same day, agents searched Victor Ramos’ residence at 1311 South 37th Street in KCK, finding $152,780 in cash, a small amount of marijuana and two weapons. Another search warrant served at 1229 South 39th Street in KCK turned up approximately $83,000 in cash, over 300 pounds of marijuana and a firearm.
Gaspar Ramos is awaiting trial in a related case. Co-defendants in this case include:
# Victor Hugo Hernandez Rodriguez, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy, and is set for sentencing April 28.
# Ricardo Garcia Mejia, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy, and is set for sentencing Aug. 8.
# Jose Ivan Salgado, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.
In addition to the FBI, the KCK Police Department, the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s office worked on the case.
