MORNING UPDATE -- Police: Tip leads to seizure of 89 marijuana plants

HUDSON FALLS -- A Derby Street man was arrested Thursday after police found 89 marijuana plants growing in his home, according to Hudson Falls Police.
Peter J. Lemery, 31, was charged after Hudson Falls Police officers investigating a tip he might be growing the drug arrived at his home to find an "unbelievable" smell of marijuana when Lemery opened the door to his home, said Hudson Falls Police Sgt. Scott Gillis.
Police asked if he was growing marijuana, and Lemery replied he "might be," Gillis said. Police asked to see the plants, and Lemery escorted them to an upstairs bedroom that was filled with plants in various stages of growing and an extensive collection of indoor growing equipment that included special lights and reflective "hoods" for plants, Gillis said.
"He had starter plants on up to mature plants that were six feet tall," the sergeant said. "It was all being grown hydroponically. It was unreal."
Lemery told police that he made about $20,000 off each "crop" of plants he grew, Gillis said. Police also seized, $4,100 in cash that was in the home, Gillis said.
Lemery was charged with unlawful growing of cannabis, a misdemeanor, but the charge might be upgraded to a felony depending on the weight of marijuana after it dries, Gillis said.
Lemery was released pending prosecution in Village Court.
Gillis and Hudson Falls Police Patrolman Brandon Kinderman investigated the case.
