The Fight on Meth

ULLIN -- Meth has taken a terrible toll on people across our region. Police say they're winning the battle but need more help from lawmakers. Illinois state police say the first time they encountered meth was in 1996. Missouri had long been the meth capital of the country, but lawmakers there started cracking down on meth labs. So the labs and manufacturer's crossed the border into Illinois.
"You're seeing methamphetamine spread throughout the whole United States, the east coast is getting hit with it as well," said Dean Hamilton of the Illinois drug task force.
Illinois was one of those states that got hit with the problem. After meth manufacturers from Missouri came across the bridge Illinois police realized something needed to be done.
"Illinois has in the last couple years the meth labs have dropped in the state of Illinois because of law enforcement taking the initiative towards this, we've got some great laws in place," said Hamilton.
One law in place restricts the sale of pseudoephedrine. Customers can only buy two boxes at a time. They must also sign a form and show I.D. when attempting to purchase it. Their name is then put into a database for police to access. But that database is not shared between stores.
Which means customers can buy two boxes at one pharmacy. Then go across the street to another. With no real way of tracking these purchases.
"So they've got to have ways to close that gap, so that when they buy two boxes here and they go to Anna to buy two more boxes up there, Anna they can say wait you've already bought two boxes today, we're not selling to you," said Hamilton.
Hamilton says in the near future he expects to see programs in place to stop people from buying pseudoephedrine from different stores.

I think that some of these meth makers just get people they know to run and get the stuff for them a lot of times anyway.
