Police charge drug gang with trafficking over 500kg of heroin 08:16' 19/07/2007 (GMT+7)
VietNamNet Bridge - Hanoi police have filed charges against 22 members of a gang which traded 518kg of heroin throughout the country over a period of several years, including its baron, who was arrested in May.
Luong Ngoc Lap, 37, had been arrested and the ring razed after the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) police caught two drug conveyors in May last year.
The ring used to operate in the north in Hanoi, Son La, Hoa Binh, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Lang Son and Quang Ninh provinces, and Hai Phong city.
They transported 1.5-9 kg of heroin at a time by car to Lang Son on the border with China. Sometimes there would be two trips a day all seven days in a week. Sirens and spotlights were reportedly used during such trips besides guns and swords.
The ring had shifted to HCMC in the south just before a different bust in Hanoi after which Lap had begun to use a fake Identity Card.
The police said he had had ties with an ecstasy-smuggling gang led by Vietnamese-Australian Nguyen Tuan Khanh, who was also arrested in May last year.
Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Possessing, trading or trafficking more than 600 grams (1.3 pounds) of heroin or 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of opium is punishable by death or life in prison.
Since the beginning of this year, 26 people have been sentenced to death on drug charges.

The article implies that 518 kilograms of heroin were trafficked, and none seized. I guess it was worth letting those 518 keys go (thanks) to catch those 22 gangsters. What!?! 22 smarter gangsters took their place?!?! Oh noes!!!!!
