LAKEHURST — Police arrested two people on drug-related charges during a check point for the Click It Or Ticket campaign, Sgt. Ronald Heinzman said.
Kenneth Novak, 34, of Yorktowne Parkway in the Whiting section of Manchester, was driving on Route 70 about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday when he was pulled over for a seat-belt check, Heinzman said.
Heinzman could smell burning marijuana coming from the pickup truck when he spoke to the driver, he said.
Novak was wearing his seat belt. However, his passenger, Lindsey Gorman, 25, with addresses in Lakehurst and Brielle, was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
During the stop, Heinzman said he determined that Novak was in possession of about 10 rocks of methamphetamine and arrested and charged Novak with possession of controlled dangerous substances. Novak was also charged with driving with a suspended license and possession of controlled dangerous substances in a motor vehicle as well as being issued two equipment violations for a cracked windshield, Heinzman said.
Novak was lodged in the Ocean County Jail held in lieu of $5,000 bail. He was released after posting bail, officials said.
The passenger, Gorman, was issued summonses for possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt, Heinzman said.
Since May 22 when the borough's Click It Or Ticket campaign began, Lakehurst police have issued 284 summonses on offenses, including seat belt violations and other offenses and arrests, Heinzman said.
The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $46 and carries no points.

Wouldn't have made a difference. They were pulled over for the purpose of checking for seat belt compliance. The arrest could have happened regardless of whether or not they were wearing their seatbelts.
What I find interesting, or atleast informing, is that the woman who was not wearing the seatbelt got the ticket for it. I had believed the driver was the one who would receive the ticket for a passenger not having a seatbelt on.

Seat belt checks = Slow down, drive slowly by a cop, you get waved through if you're wearing a seatbelt, told to pull to the side if you aren't
