Mailman Busted For Delivering Pot
PORTLAND - A postal worker was arrested Thursday at his home in Vernonia, Ore., after an indictment for distributing pot to an underage individual.
Police say 46-year-old Rick Berkan sold pound-quantities of marijuana, occasionally while operating his mail truck, in the Cedar Mill area of Washington County.
Over a period of years, Berkan allegedly sold the marijuana to a buyer who was 16- to 19-years old at the time.
A total of three search warrants were executed on residences, two in the Cedar Mill area and a third at Berkan's residence in Vernonia, where investigators found a marijuana growing operation. They seized around 5 pounds of pot from the home.
It is a felony to distribute a controlled substance to anyone under 21 years of age. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison.
The investigation is ongoing. Berkan was temporarily released and his trial is scheduled for May.
