Drug driving problem at Christmas
Thousands of young drivers will risk injuries and even death this Christmas by driving after taking illegal drugs, according to new research.
Almost a third of 17-24 year-olds surveyed admitted to taking illegal drugs within the last year and nearly 100,000 could drive after taking illegal drugs during the festive period. In the survey carried out for Green Flag of drivers aged between 17 and 24 years, almost a third know someone who takes illegal drugs and drives regularly.
One-in-ten also said they were likely to take illegal drugs over the festive period and more than half said someone they knew would take illegal drugs.
Despite legal drugs such as tranquillizers and anti-depressants having the potential to affect the ability to drive for a number of hours, 15 per cent said they would drive within just three hours of taking them.
Almost one-in-five people killed in road crashes had traces of illegal drugs in their blood, with cannabis being the most common.
Driving whilst under the influence of drugs – legal or illegal – is just as dangerous as driving when drunk. The affects of drugs include slow reaction times, poor concentration, sleepiness or fatigue, confused thinking, distorted perception, over confidence, impaired co-ordination, erratic behaviour and blurred vision.
Philippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: "Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be the same stigma associated with drug driving as there is with drink driving, but it's crucial that people realise just how dangerous it is.
"Even the morning after a night out, drugs can still be in the body's system and the consequences of impaired driving can be severe. Not only could drivers lose their licence but they risk causing an accident, injuring themselves or someone else."

Maybe I am crazy, but:
- I perform a hell of a lot better, while playing Geometry Wars, when high on weed.
- I drive better, too. Not when I am high as a kite, but one-to-two-or-more hours after smoking, while I am coming down. I am much more focused, and much less nervous.
I have never had "distorted perception", "impaired co-ordination", "erratic behavior" or "blurred vision" when smoking pot, and I actually do not get very sleepy - I enjoy doing physical activities (pushups are a high-times favorite), sex, walks to 711, instead of driving, etc), nor am I very confused.
Now, taking a hallucinogen or a tranquilizer-type drug, then driving, well, is just dumb. People need to realize that there are very few "golden rules" out there, and need to learn for themselves.

I second Fixxer, like an hour after smoking when I'm still pretty high, but not the highest, I drive wicked good, very focused. And I don't tailgate as much as I do when I'm sober Peace

I drive better on almost all drugs, except coke which makes me kind of tweaked, jittery, and hard to focus. Opiates, most pills, and other drugs actually help improve my motor skills by making me more relaxed or focused.

I like those 2 lines the most, a good laugh was had and then a look of sad at the ignorance. So, it seems only 1 out of 3 people know someone who takes drugs? And, that almost 20% of people in the UK smoke weed or consume drugs on a regular basis.

> Maybe I am crazy, but:
Not crazy, but not accurate either. One of the reason why we do double blind studies is because people are not able to accurately judge their own impairment while impaired. For example, a drunk person will claim they are fine to drive. When the drunk person sobers up and you ask them if they were too drunk to drive, they will say no, they were fine. If you then show them video taken while they were drunk, they will realize that they were indeed too drunk to drive, even though they remember being fine.
I have heard many people claim that they drive better when stoned than when sober. However, study after study shows the opposite effect. Driving while stoned (on cannabis) impairs ones abilities to drive. The impairment is not very much. I would rather share the road with somebody stoned on cannabis than somebody talking on their cell phone, for example. However, to deny that impairment occurs is inaccurate.
> I drive better on almost all drugs
There is a difference between actually driving better and thinking you are driving better... drugs tend to create optimistic perceptions.

It's not surprising that marijuana shows up in blood tests of dead drivers after an accident - not because it impairs you and can cause an accident. Mainly because THC does reside in the body a long time. Of course, don't tell them that - it'll ruin their good scare story that pot is causing thousands upon thousands of road accidents a year (when really they just happened to have THC in their bloodstream from the last weekend).
