TRENTON — New Jersey parents know too little about so-called designer drugs, and they undervalue how their children's friends influence decisions to begin using drugs or alcohol, concludes a study released yesterday.
"With the popularity of designer drugs and with the resourcefulness of today's youth both on the rise, parents are faced with a scary challenge," said Joseph Miele, chairman of the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey.
The partnership contracted to have the survey of 501 New Jersey parents done last January. These parents had youngsters from ages 12 to 15.
"New Jersey parents need to educate themselves about dangerous drugs new and old, and engage their children," Miele said.
The survey reported 73 percent of parents admitted knowing little or just about nothing about OxyContin, a pain-reliever that can offer morphine-like stupors, and 72 percent said the same about Ecstasy, which acts as both a stimulant and psychedelic, producing enhanced enjoyment from touching.
The report said 64 percent of parents said they knew little about methamphetamines, which emerge in rural labs as a poor-man's version of heroin, and 63 percent said they knew little about about inhalants, which can offer highs, and steroids that speed body growth while risking damage to organs and other body parts.

roids have never been scientifically proven to be harmful. just cause acne.
when the ban was set in 1990...the DEA and american medical association opposed the ban.

I think they're confusing meth with homebake.
