Mother fatally stabbed

BRENTWOOD - On April 21, 2005, Richard Staszewski, 21, drank a cocktail at a strip bar, snorted an "eight ball" of cocaine, ingested 7 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and downed multiple cold medication tablets before going to his Brentwood home and stabbing his 48-year-old mother to death.
For his admission of guilt to the second-degree murder of his mother, Nickoletta "Nicki" Staszewski, "Ricky" was sentenced Thursday to 20 to 40 years in a state prison, with a chance for review in 15 years.
During a sentencing hearing before Rockingham County Superior Court Judge Patricia Coffey, Richard Staszewski tearfully read a statement, taking responsibility for the matricide and apologizing to his father, sister and aunt.
He also apologized to his murder victim - his deceased mother.
"I want to apologize to my mom. You didn’t do anything to deserve this," said Staszewski, who is noticeably heavier than the day of his arrest. "I hope wherever you are, you will forgive me. I love you, Mom, and not a day goes by I don’t think of it."
Jeff Strelzin, the N.H. attorney general’s chief homicide prosecutor, asked Coffey to impose a sentence of 20 to 50 years. The prosecutor described how Staszewski had used at least two knives to kill his mother, during a bloody struggle in multiple locations inside their 45 Robinson St., Brentwood, home.
Much of the attack occurred in front of his younger sister, Callie, then 13.
Staszewski’s father, Mike, asked the court for leniency.
"I do not support the AG’s sentence," he told the judge tearfully. "I want to help and assist Ricky. I want to be there so he can accomplish something after prison."
Public defender Richard Samdperil presented expert testimony documenting the murder defendant’s history of substance abuse, attention deficit disorder, depression and a brain tumor. He asked the judge to sentence his client to 12½ years in prison.
"We too ask that you hold him accountable," said Samdperil. "But this was not premeditated."
Coffey agreed.
"I have no question this wasn’t premeditated," said the judge. "This was just a horror."
As Mike Staszewski wiped tears from his eyes and hugged Callie, Coffey sentenced their son and brother to decades in prison.
Coffey ruled that if Staszewski remains on good behavior, he may petition the court in 15 years to have the balance suspended. The judge also ordered Ricky to receive mental health and drug and alcohol counseling while in prison.
