Drug dealers target rehab clinics September 25, 2005 - dailymail.co.uk
Drug dealers have hit a new low by targeting rehab clinics with adverts for cut-price heroin and crack, according to reports.
The callous criminals have distributed calling cards to a needle exchange, rehab clinic and detox centre in Portsmouth, Druglink magazine reported.
Heroin was being sold half price, with 0.4g bags offered for ?20 instead of ?40.
Needle-exchange project worker Jason Roberts said: "These dealers were seeking out people who were clean or in recovery in order to sell more heroin.
"They were handing out calling cards to homeless people and sticking them up outside rehab exits.
"We shredded as many as we could find."
The dealers' tactics attracted heroin users from as far away as Bristol and Birmingham to the city, the magazine said.
Portsmouth's drug services reported a significant rise in the number of people coming forward for clean needles and treatment because of the influx - as many as 40 a month
The dealers responsible for targeting the rehab clinics were now thought to have left the city, said the magazine, run by leading drugs charity DrugScope.
