Woman, 75, busted for small pot plant on balcony

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A 75-year-old Greek woman has been charged with drug offenses after police in her a sleepy island village spotted a small cannabis plant growing on her balcony, authorities said.
Hariklia Griva, a widowed mother of four from Ayiassos, on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesvos, was arrested Wednesday and charged with growing cannabis with the intent of trafficking in the drug. She was released on bail of $2,480.
The retiree, whose late husband was a policeman, told police the 16 inch potted plant grew from seed dropped by her pet canaries. The birds live in a cage on the balcony overlooking a busy Ayiassos street - opposite the local police station.
"I couldn't believe it, when they told me I was being arrested," Griva said. "The plant must have grown from the bird seed. I had no idea what the plant was. I watered it regularly. I thought it looked quite nice."

And this boys and girls is the situation in Greece  In Greece they are all called "Narcotics"
A 75 year old lady arrested? For one small plant? Yes,a small plant is ideal for trafficing ,she might make sooooo much money out of it to buy a Villa with a swimming pool....
Sometimes i wonder about those officers. Yes pot is illegal in Greece,but when you see a 75 yo woman (she has got one foot onto senility for logic's sake) with one plant can you arrest her feeling that you serve your "duty"? Feeling that you have combated "crime" and that you have stopped "an amount of marijuana circulating in the market"?
I would like ,for once ,to have a look into an officer's mind that gladly enforces laws like that with a sense of "duty" and "pride".Gosh,it must be so lonely in there to be a braincell in their brains...

Greece is fucked up, I believe they have a seven year minimum sentance law for possesion of any illegal drug.
