TOWN OF CHENANGO -- Broome County sheriff's investigators seized 8 pounds of marijuana, more than 5 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms and 35 Valium pills after two people were stopped in a parking lot on Upper Front Street Wednesday. Deputy Kevin Smith, on a routine patrol, stopped two people who were apparently smoking marijuana around 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot.
Jayne C. Shelby, 26, of Lancaster, Pa., was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana in connection with the incident.
Deputies charged Shelby's boyfriend, Stephen D. Conlin, 40, of Lebanon, Pa., with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, felonies, after the stop.
Shelby and Conlin were near Conlin's van when Smith found them.
A search of the van yielded the 8 pounds of marijuana, 5-1/2 pounds of mushrooms, pills and $10,526 in cash. Shelby and Conlin also had about half an ounce of marijuana between them, said county sheriff's detective Lt. Michael Fedish.
Depending on the type of the drug, marijuana goes for between $1,100 and $2,000 per pound, Fedish said. The pills sell for anywhere from $2 to $10 apiece.
While mushrooms are not uncommon in the area, it's rare for police to seize that much in one stop, Fedish said. The greatest amount of mushrooms Fedish said he has seen from one incident is a pound.
Mushrooms sell for about $300 per ounce, said a state police narcotics investigator who was not involved in the case.
Conlin, who was sent to county jail without bail Wednesday afternoon, and Shelby were passing through the area when they were stopped on Upper Front Street, Fedish said.
The county's Special Investigations Task Force and a K-9 team from the Binghamton Police Bureau assisted in the investigation.
