 Montreal actor one of three charged with drug trafficking

Cocaine trafficking and money laundering charges have been laid in Vancouver against a Montreal trio that includes an actor who played a mobster on a popular TV series, The Vancouver Sun has learned.
The investigation that led to the charges against actor and convicted trafficker Bruno Diquinzio, as well as Jean Gaetan Gingras and Luc Bolea, was conducted by the special RCMP task force investigating the assassination of newspaper publisher Tara Singh Hayer.
Insp. Kevin Hackett, head of the Hayer task force, said he could not comment on how the new charges relate to the probe into the 1998 slaying of the outspoken journalist.
"There are links, but we are not at liberty to discuss them at this point," Hackett told The Sun on Friday. "As a result of our ongoing investigation, we have made these arrests."
Gingras, 65, and Bolea, 35, made a first appearance in Vancouver Provincial Court on Friday and were remanded in custody until Monday. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for the arrest of Diquinzo, 42.
All three are charged with conspiracy to traffic in cocaine in both Vancouver and Montreal between March 31, 2008 and June 1, 2008, according to the indictment.
Gingras is facing two additional counts of hiding more than $125,000 U.S. from drug trafficking in January and February of this year.
Hayer was gunned down on Nov. 18, 1998 after he had agreed to be a witness in the Air India bombing case.
Five years ago, an unrelated Vancouver gang trial heard that the terrorist group Babbar Khalsa had hired some gangsters to murder Hayer for $50,000.
The same trial heard that Hayer's assassins were also responsible for a number of other gangland slayings in B.C. that remain unsolved.
Hackett's task force, dubbed Project Expedio, is investigating the Hayer case and all the related gangland murders. Already the task force has laid charges against two people in one of those unsolved slayings, as well as an attempted murder charge against another man - Raj Soomel - who later pleaded guilty.
But despite an extensive and continuing investigation, no charges directly related to Hayer's murder have been laid in almost a decade.
Diquinzio has the most extensive record of the three charged this week and was well-known for his role in the Radio-Canada hit series Omerta. He played the son of a big-time Mafioso.
In January 2000, he was sentenced to three years in jail for several drug-trafficking offences after being on the run from police for 17 months.
He had disguised himself by dyeing his hair black and growing a beard, and he used a fake name with matching ID.
RCMP had earlier uncovered his drug cache - 29 kilos of marijuana, six kilos of hash, cocaine, heroin, and hundreds of LSD tablets.
There was also $250,000 in cash, all the materials to make a remote-control bomb, a machine gun, a semi-automatic rifle, night-vision goggles, a silencer, three pistols and two pens made into crude one-shot pistols.
